Just came back from the movie. And it was awesome. A true Live Action Anime. It was faithful and trully captured the spirit of the anime. Speed even did his pose from the original series' opening. Freaking loved John Goodman as Pops. Liked Roger Allan. The score was brilliant. The theme song was a combination of the Japanese and the English theme. The action was cool, breath-taking. 4/5 p/s: Really not for narrow minded people, anime haters and people doesn't care for any innovations. |

Omnia enim stolidi magis admirantur amantque, inversis quae sub verbis latitantia cernunt, veraque constituunt quae belle tangere possunt auris et lepido quae sunt fucata sonore. Indeed, the stupid most admire and love all that is scarcely discernible, hidden by abstruse words, and accept as true all things that sweetly caress the ear, and that are masked by a pleasant sound. --Titus Lucretius, De Rerum Natura, circa 80 B.C.--

If you're referring to the song that comes with the ending credits, I also thought that was a cool touch they added. Specially since it started with the original theme of the series, with the same instruments, and IN JAPANESE! Then it went to English, and then I think it went to some more languages. I know for a fact that there was a part in Spanish. And yeah, the part where he did the pose gave me goosebumps. I absolutely didn't expect it. |

Saw it with Danielle and Feebatron. That movie was pure entertainment right there. Very fun, very funny, wild, I enjoyed it. I mean, I won't go so far as to say it's the best movie of '08 though (that's Iron Man so far :quite:) but it was good. I have to say though, that 2008 is becoming one of the best years for movies imo. We still have plenty of amazing movies on the way this year (especially this summer). As fun and exciting as this movie was, I really hope other LAA won't have the same style as Speed Racer. I think it was something only a series like SR could pull off. I'd like the DB/DBZ series to be a lot more serious (we were laughing our asses off throughout the whole movie, even during serious scenes, we couldn't take it seriously, it was just too ridicules, lol). So I'll have to disagree about this being what a "live action anime should be." No, it may have worked for this particular series but it'd never work for others like DBZ and Eva and such. But yeah, like I said, pure entertainment. This is a movie that really shows why people go to the theatre. ![]() Oh and I must add that I felt like I was on a huge acid trip throughout the entire movie. PG my ass.

You know, even after those rave reviews I have NO interest in seeing this movie, lol. I guess maybe because I really didn't care for the series, especially the campiness of it. I'll probably netflix it when it comes to dvd, but I won't shell out theatre money. Especially with Indy 4, Kung Fu Panda, Death Note, and Batman on the way. |

Well, in my case, I didn't mean that all other LAA should be like this. Just that it sets the standard in at least how good they should be. Although there are a few anime that COULD work with the same style as Speed Racer (Voltron for example). And I was surprised it got away with a PG rating too, specially after that "Holy Shi(bleep)" scene. |

Yeah I was thinking Voltron too (couldn't remember the name lol). And yeah I was also surprised about the rating. They had the word "ass" in there at least like 5 times. And Spritle flipping the bird too. For shame.

Like Rob said, we saw it. I didn't enjoy it as much as he did. Some of the scenes were good (and some just hilarious) but for the better part of the time, Phoebe and I would look at each other and whisper, "This movie is so damn long." I actually didn't mind the cartoonish landscape and what not. I thought I wouldn't like it, but it matched well with the tone of the movie. And whenever I say that, that means that the movie hasn't really kept me interested. Yeah, the effects were cool, and some of the characters were good (love X). But it seemed like some of the scenes were forced, and some were just random. SPOILER Throughout the movie, I was waiting for Speed and Sparky to hold a conversation with one another (and it didn't happen) and then at the end, the two of them embraced one another and got all emotional. If I were someone who had never watched the anime, I wouldn't have understood wtf that was about. It may have been a good adaptation, but as a movie, there were a few things that I can point out that didn't make it so great. Character development could have been better for some of the characters, of course the campiness (I know it was like that in the anime, but critics are critics, and I didn't like that about the anime anyway), you couldn't take it seriously (laughed at dramatic moments), and at some points, the special effects disorientated me to where I didn't know what I was looking at. 2.5/5 for me. |

I just got back from seeing it in IMAX. Talk about a BAM! in your face roller coaster ride! This is the only way to see this movie in my opinion. Your not just watching the movie, your in it! Right down on the track in the car with Speed! During some of the race scenes I found myself digging my right foot into the concrete floor of the theater and I wanted to yell WOOOOHOOOO! when Speed pulled off something cool. The action was so well done, you didn't miss anything. Not like Transformers where the action sequences we so fast they blurred. I also like the way they did the scene transitions. I almost felt like I was reading the pages of a manga. I like the mix of the Japanese and American look and feel. They complemented each other and neither one over shone the other. The use of the multilanguage announcers was a nice touch too. John Goodman's performance was wonderful and Roger Allam as Royalton was very reminiscent of Tim Curry, pampas yet charming until things turned dark. Emile Hirsch got Speed 100% and of course there's Rain. He did an excellent job as Taejo Togokhan. I loved his white leathers with the black dragon emblazoned on it and of course he's absolutely gorgeous! (Crush much? Yeah!) You had to pay very close attention to the flashback sequences and put everything together in your head to build the background story, Very Japanese approach I think. The other thing that was different was the fact there were very few credits or opening music. It just dumped you, BAM, right into an action sequence that got you heart immediately pumping for the rest of the film and the pace really didn't let up throughout. I'd this was another 10/10 film and really sets the bar high for LAA just as Iron Man set the bar for LAC (Live Action Comics). I mean in quality, attention to details, honoring the source material as well as the Japanese roots of the art form, anime. Bigger is better in this case and I don't think this will work as well on the small screen from the DVD. You really will need a widescreen HDTV to get the whole effect. This may be the film that makes paying the big bucks for Blu-Ray worth it. |

I wrote a review for this on another site (Bluetights) and the score I gave it was 5/10...distinctly average film. Shallow characters, meaningless plot, Racer X being a wasted opportunity...I've never seen the show, so maybe that's the way it's supposed to be. To me it just felt like it was going through the motions until it got to the action scenes...which were intense, sure but the film was all style and no substance. |
