Well, it seems that this movie is going to have a lot of trouble getting back its budget money. Projected ticket sales for the weekend are at $20.2 million. That's even worse than the harshest analysts were expecting. Now, haters of this film are almost celebrating this movie's flop which is pretty ridiculous. I have never seen another movie that got so much hate from people before they even saw it. But what I really do hate is that since this seems to be bombing that we might not get a sequel. I mean, hell, I don't remember such a big flop from a good movie since Kingdom of Heaven opened to like $19 million a few years ago. I think there is more than one reason for this movie to have flopped: 1. The first and most important reason is that it came one week after Iron Man which got excellent reviews and excellent word-of-mouth praise and is based on a character from one of the two most powerful comic book companies. 2. It came out one week before The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, and even though the first one sucked, it made A LOT of money and the second installment is expected to do just as well. 3. Coming out on Mother's Day weekend. Who in the world is going to take their mother to see Speed Racer? 4. People who were giving it a rating of "1" on IMDB before they even saw it. 5. Rottentomatoes. 6. The Wachowski brothers knew that they were making something very visually atypical. It's almost like they said to each other "to hell with the studio's money, let's make the movie the way its supposed to be and not the way it'll make money" 7. Many people had lost faith on the Wachowski brothers after the last two Matrix films. Regardless of how much money it makes, this film was great IMO. I hate it when people think that good box office performance means good movie. I just hope that it can at least make enough for the studio to keep faith in a sequel. As for crowd reports, I'd like to know how packed was the theater where others have seen it and how people seemed to react. In my theater, there were probably about 30-40 people total (it was a small one, less than half-full) but they all seemed to be enjoying it a lot. A big dude who seemed to be in his 50's sat right next to me by himself and he laughed a lot. |

Seeing the midnight premiere as I'd originally wanted to just wasn't practical, so I ended up going to an early matineé the next morning instead. It was a decent crowd for such. Couple dozen people. Close to 50, maybe. I'm sure it was nearly packed that night though. |

Here's a video of viewers' interviews after seeing the movie: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ux7grDAb3hA I think it kinda proves my point that people did like it but Iron Man was too strong a competition for it. Another proof is that since the movie came out, the IMDB rating has gone up by a lot. |

We rushed to the theater, thinking that it would be packed by the time we got there (Saturday night). There were 20 people there. Everyone laughed at the same stuff, which was pretty much throughout the movie. Some people left in the middle of the movie, some people fell asleep through it. In the end, I think that we all thought it was pretty long. |

Me and Cait went to see it last night again. The funny thing is that I saw a couple that was there the first time I went to see it (nerds...lol) There were about 10-20 people this time. Both times I went to see it, I didn't notice anybody leaving or falling asleep. Last night however, there was a kid who WOULD. NOT. SHUT. UP. He kept yelling GO GO GO GO GO!! And his mom had to take him to the side of the theater a couple times but he kept being loud as hell. I think it was two kids actually. |

Speed Racer was good, and i was very pleased the the waschowski bros were the ones to take up the project it should have gotten an august or fall release though. So that it can be by itself and not comparing with Ironman or Chron.O.Narn. |

I did. But as for our theater.. twas empty. Probably 5 other people there, and they were a family. They all seemed to love it, just as much as me and my mom did. I really want to see it again, call me nerd, but hey I even bought a speed racer t-shirt at the mall the other day. |

Well I am certainly not surprised Speed Racer flopped. Speed Racer was never really all that popular. And besides I would bet half my life that the Wachowski Brothers made this just because they can and wanted to. |

With how wonderfully faithful the movie turned out, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if that were the case. "Let's make this movie the way it SHOULD be made, not the way that will please the critics or make money." And I wouldn't have it any other way; the movie was PERFECT. //Flips off the Entertainment Critics and makes plans to see Speed Racer again// |

^I agree Kaboom. The critics opinions have been mostly worthless and I'd say it's one of the biggest reasons why it's doing so poor. When every media outlet reports that Speed racer got bad reivews and did horrible in its first week, people who ahven't seen it yet will just take their word for it and leave it at that. |

Or.... it could be because people like me, who did see it (and STILL didn't like it), told their friends and family that they didn't like it.

I'd have to agree with Dani on this one. I'm not going to begrudge anyone an opinion here, but we are the anime community that enjoys the campy, cartoony feel of anime, even when applied to a live action movie. For a movie to do well with critics, and the box office, it must be one that the general public can enjoy. Just because many people here enjoyed it doesn't mean the public will, especially with the fact that it was born from (and as pointed out, faithfully adapted from) a decades old cartoon that didn't do very well in the first place. I'm just saying, guys, don't discount the public just because they didn't like it, everyone has their opinions. |

100% agreed. Critics don't rate a movie based on how well it is of an adaptation (if it is adapted from anything). They look at how it is as a movie. My fandom of a good movie surpasses my fandom of a good anime. |
