They need to pull some serious damage control in a few hours with their e3 keynote. I'm excited to see the ramifications in the market. Will Versus also go multiplat? Will Sony change their mind about a price cut because of this? Will sh*t hit the fan? Exciting times.

And as a PS3 owner, I'm tempted to jealously defend what was until recently my chosen systems flagship title. But I'm not going to, because this really just means that more people will get to experience what's bound to be an amazing experience. More power to ya, Square. Actually, I'm more excited for Versus than I am for XIII for a couple of reasons. Although the new XIII trailer looks beautiful, something about the pseudo-Star Wars esque soundtrack makes me worry that it might be going down the same route aesthetically as XII, which I found to be really underwhelming and the weakest Fantasy I've played. That said, I might just still be pining over the departure of Nobuo Uematsu, and with Yoshinori Kitase back at the helm, I'm sure everything will work out splendidly. That said, I'm still more excited for Versus. Not just because it's said to be an Action-RPG, which I find interesting, nor because I think the main character looks like a phenomenal badass. No, what got me was the whole aesthetic of the trailers. Maybe it's just the gothy Cure fan in me, but the whole dark vibe of the trailers got me thinking that something exciting is happening here. Although I love the Final Fantasy series and the epic stories therein, one consistent complaint I have is that they always seem to strive to be a bit safe, family friendy, even - dare I say it? - tame. Versus presents a radical departure from the series' normally colourful palette, the first genuinely visceral moment the series has seen since FFVIII, and judging by some screenshots and interviews, it shows some hints of literary aspiration (the Shakespeare quote in the first trailer and the inplied Romeo and Juliet paralell between the male and female lead are not lost on me) and perhaps even of moral ambiguity. All that taken together it seems to suggest to me that Versus represents Final Fantasy growing up, rather than peddling shamelessly to the fans. Oh, and there's the reference in one interview to in-game airship battles. That definitely has me excited.
