NFL 08 season chat

Well, I guess this is just chat about random games and teams throughout the year.

I'll start with my obvious favorites, the Pittsburgh Steelers. After a full training season of no injuries, illnesses or motorcycle wrecks Ben Roethlisberger was in rare form during the sunday game against the Texans. Now granted, this isn't the most challenging team, but for his 2+ quarters of play Ben went 13/14, 2 TD passes, no interceptions. He even made the first rush for yards gained in the game, running 17 for a first down on the 3rd play of their first drive.

Willie Parker was also in rare form with over 25 carries, 100+ yardage and 3 TDs of his own. With the pass heavy offensive tendancies in the NFL nowadays, inspired by the Patriot's hurry-up offense that won 18 games last season, Pitt is showing that a balanced offense can still score points. With RB Parker, FB Mendelson, and Heinz Ward and Heath Miller catching down field, this is definitely a team to watch.

Once they pulled out to a 35-3 lead, Pittsburgh decided it was time to save a little of Ben's strength and put in the newly recruited Byron Leftwich, pulled out of free agency after 2nd string Charlie Batch broke his collarbone in game one of preseason. This proved a huge disappointment. After a game of terrific drives and very little field time for the Steeler's punter, Leftwich went 4 and out on 3 consecutive drives, landing an 0/4 passing record. Hopefully they can get him up to speed, in case he really does need to go in during crunch time.

Right now, Steelers are top dogs of the AFC. Manning is coming off knee surgery, it'll probably be a bit before he gets back to form judging by the way he played Sunday Night so thats definitely a hindering factor for the Colts. And with Brady being out the whole season(ahaha!), Patriots probably aren't going places. AFC East is up for grabs, and Buffalo is my pick to win that division.

But yeah, Steelers looked great all around, their special teams played well, the O-line played surprisingly well against an underated Texan's defense, the offense was clicking(no surprise when we're healthy and have nice blocking), and the defense is playing at the calibur I'd come to expect from the Steelers and Coach LeBeau. I'm expecting big things from that LB corps; Woodley, Harrison, Farrior, Foote, Timmons, especially Woodley and Harrison who performed impressively. Ever since last year, I was looking forward to what Woodley could do in a starting spot, and he didn't disappoint in his debut.

I'm also looking at the offense for a big year as well, Parker/Mendenhall combo will develop big later on and I believe Roethlisberger could surpass his numbers from last season. Hines Ward will be reliable as usual, and I belive Santonio will explode this year and make a mark as a top receiver in the NFL. So yeah, High expectations of the Steelers from me despite their schedule difficulty.

Even without Brady the Pats will do fine, they will still win the division. They are still loaded.

The Green Bay packers are off to a decent start. Beating their rivals the Minnesota Vikings (whom the people seem to like to win the division) and they did it without old man Favre. Aaron Rodgers 18/22 is great and Greg Jennings and Donald Driver proving again to be good receivers. Ryan Grant had a decent game not a 100 yards but 92 yards isn't bad. Personally I'm not into the Adrian Peterson hype, but that may be the Packer fan in me.

For the NFC it was good to see some older (and perhaps thought by some as incapable of returning to success) quarterbacks in Jake Delhomme and Donovan McNabb play good games. For the Patriots without Brady, I dont know the Jets looked decent with Favre (not really a Favre supporter myself, I still like him, but have a sour taste from the situation) and the Dolphins looked pretty good with Chad Pennington, the most accurate (active) quarterback in the NFL.

Things I didn't really expect to see was the Chicago Bears playing well and beating the Indianapolis Colts. I hate the bears and hate to say it, but they played well.

I am not really a fan or non-fan of the Pack, always had respect for Favre though. But I think his hype really gave the rest of the team an undercut of underestimation. Aside from him you never saw a huge name come from Green Bay, so the assumption that they couldn't win without Brett dominated. While Brett is an amazing athelete you can't have a team that can win like that with only one player. He had great support around him and I think they still have potential to be a playoff team without him. I have my doubts about the Jets. Again, Brett doesn't make the team. They are going to have to do some quick training to keep winning and not fall apart.

As well, NE isn't going to lay down just because Brady is out. It's a talented franchise (even if their coach is a cheat) and as long as the 2nd string can get off on the right foot, they should do well.

Patriots are in trouble, never a fan of Cassel.

Peterson is a great back, might have a slump this year.

Favre is off to a great start, as is Matt Ryan (caught me off guard).

Green Bay didn't impress me that much. Statistically they were on the mark but they didnt look much sharper than Minnesota on the field.

Can't believe Chad Pennington has a job anywhere tbh.

Steelers play the toughest schedule in the NFL if I remember right so I'm excited to see how they can do.

Chad Ocho Cinco was in decent form though. Still has the name "Johnson" on his jersey though.

I'm rather disappointed in my team.. actually it's the coaching I find disappointing. I was upset when Crennel got the extension he got earlier in the year. I don't think he's a good coach. Like the call he made to kick a field goal in the 4th quarter, when we're down by like 3 touchdowns, it could have been an easy 4th down, instead of going for it, because we didn't have anything to lose anyways, he kicks a field goal.

The team is not disciplined at all. We have so many stupid mistakes and penalties, and Braylon Edwards hurting his foot in training camp the way he did his a sure sign of that. And WTF was up with him in that game. He dropped pretty much everything that was thrown to him. Stalleworth suddenly getting injured wasn't cool, and offcourse being without Cribbs is hurting us I think. Winslow had an awesome game and the ball should have been thrown to him more, and he should get an extension right effin now.

But with that all aside.. I think we're going to beat ze Steelers. Yes, I think I could even bet money on it.

Well, you get 2 shots at it. I gotta say, Pitt is one of the finer looking teams in the AFC right now, regardless of my personal preference, but I always know there are games that they are just going to sit in for and just fall apart. Can't fault Cleveland for losing week 1, Dallas is always a hard opponent. With their 10-6 last year, I think they have some good chances. I have a feeling they are looking to settle the score on Pittsburgh this year for being 2 out of those 6 losses. Next week will definitely be a good game. Pittsburgh needs to keep the narcissism down a peg and not let week 1 go to their head (Tomlin is pretty good at keeping them in the here and now) and Cleveland needs keep their rush defence on their toes and find a way through the steel curtain.

I would say their great players from 20's and 60's were huge names. Curly Lambeau, Don Hutson, Bart Starr, and Ray Nitschke just to name a few. However those names may be big only to Green Bay, but I would say those great players deserve recognition like Favre did.

Aside from that on the New England thing, they'll be ok without Brady, Cassell was decent. I dont think they will come close to returning to the superbowl though.

I was thinking more in the "Favre era". Not many big names while he was there.

Well then you could say Reggie White, I would say he was a big name player. Antonio Freeman and Robert Brooks maybe as wide receivers. Other than that I can see what you mean.

Dude. I'm so sick of losing to the Steelers. Derek Anderson can not play under pressure. He throws interceptions at some of the most crucial times. Romeo has horrible clock management. I thought our Defense held up rather nicely though. Rogers is a beast.

So I'm ready Steeler fans, rub it in my face. :EFFTHAT:

I'm really surprised the Patriots won though, honestly..

I won't rub it in. The Browns have always been a class act. Romeo came out after halftime and the first thing he did was say "We screwed up." He owned up to it, got over it and went back out to finish the game. The D was definitely putting itself to the task. One would think that a battle between "Big Baby" and "Big Ben" would go to Ben but Rogers was absolutely brutal. Every time he got through Madden and Michaels kept saying that Ben was about to bust his shoulder again.

What's his name, #17, could have played better. He had a few good catches, but leading the league in dropped passes in 07 hasn't quite rubbed off yet.

Overall it was a great defensive game (hence the 10-6 score, only one touchdown allowed). Ben was a little hit or miss compared to last week. Willie Parker went over 100 again and looked great as always and a few key plays from Heinz ward.

Both teams played well last night, with a few trip ups here and there and while I have great respect for the Browns there is one thing about them I do not like....the fans in the stadium(present company excluded). It's been a while since I've heard such a negative reaction and most of it was to their own team. At the half they booed because of the time use, and then a huge uproar at the end of the game. Now if there is a bad call, yeah boo, if the opposing team is beating the pants of you, boo but be polite, lol. Don't boo at the end of a well fought game just because your team lost. Either applaud the team for putting up a good fight or file out quietly.

It was a good game, I'm just sour because we lost... again.. to the Steelers.

Braylon Edwards should be playing much, much better than he is. Once again I thought Kellen Winslow had a spectacular game.

The fans were booing because they/most Browns fans wanted Romeo to go for the first down and possible touchdown on 4th and I think it was 7. It was like last week in Dallas. Kicking a field goal with that little bit of time was really only going to put pointless points on the board. (BUT I can see Romeo's thinking on it. But our offense is not playing to hot, and there was no way we were going to be able to come back and get the touchdown with 30 seconds.) And they were booing out of frustration really. The losing streak to the Steelers now goes to 10. How many times did they broadcast that we've lost to them 9 straight times last night?

It will be a very interesting game later in the season. Or atleast I hope it will be interesting..

It was either the 10 streak or the fact that they have only beat Pittsburgh once in the last 16 match-ups.
