Well, it’s that exciting time of year again for film fanatics; the Academy Awards are coming up, that gloriourly bombastic ceremony when cinema’s most prestigious merit is handed out to the year’s classiest films. And hand-in-hand with the Oscars comes a lesser-known (but still significant) ceremony; the Golden Raspberry Awards, or the Razzies. Seeking to represent the exact inverse of the Oscars, the Razzies are an irreverent celebration of the year’s worst pieces of cinema, a dishonour and a discredit to any film, director or actor unlucky enough to receive one. Unfortunately, it seems that Speed Racer, a film beloved by this site but not so much by the wider public, is set to make an appearance at the awards.

Speed Racer’s box-office flop has been well documented, presently having grossed $95 million worldwide against a $120 million budget. Upon release, it received a generally negative critical consensus, albeit with a few dissenting voices (two of those voices belonging to our very own Son Goshin and Live Action Vegeta). Now it’s been nominated in the “Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel” category of the 29th Razzie Awards, alongside The Day the Earth Stood Still, Disaster Movie and Meet the Spartans, Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Let’s hope it’s spared the final abject humiliation of winning, because I think it’s safe to agree it’s far from the worst movie in that category.
