Sequel Casting Thread; The Dream Team for DBE 2

As per Frankie's request, I'm creating a casting thread only for sequels. Which means it's a thread for casting characters in this series of films, not reboots or recasts, which are unlikely to be considered if DBE flops anyway.

And the former Dream Team thread is pretty dead, dated by 3-4 years and it's hard to even find casting suggestions or discussions buried beneath the muck of all the frills and off-topic deviations.

I mean, sequels do depend on box office success, but I predict that despite the negative press it'll probably be only the third highest weekend gross, behind Observe & Report and Hannah Montana.

I haven't done this in ages, but I think I can have fun with this too.

Character: Vegeta
Actor: Timothy Olyphant
Why: While I've always liked the idea of Robert Dodrill as Vegeta, at this point in the game it's barely a pipe dream. Robert seems to have moved onto new and different endeavors now anyway, such as directing and camerawork. And while I thought Dodrill was perfect as Vegeta in many ways, such as the voice, the appearance, the stature, the arrogance, I was never fully convinced on the most important aspect: being a jerk.

Vegeta, up until maybe the Buu saga, is a downright unlikeable prick. He beats up kids, he punches his own son, he's a misogynist, he's a classist, he kills his own partner, he's psychotically obsessed with everything Goku does, and when brought down a notch he cries about it all and blames Frieza for his own jerkiness! I think someone like Timothy Olyphant would nail it. In Live Free or Die Hard his villainy reaches hammy Blofeld levels. In Girl Next Door he's a scummy pornographer who's assholishness peaks when he beats up Emile Hirsch, fools him into taking e and makes him steal a statue. But in Hitman and Deadwood he's more a badass and in Damages he's more the chivalrous, mysterious type. I think the main problem is that he's already 40, though he has Johnny Depp genes.

Wow, those are actually pretty solid casting choices in my humble opinion. I just don't quite see Olyphant doing it, but phoenix most definitely has the acting prowess and spectrum to pull of the role, no question. His past roles speak for themselves. And I definitely think that he could pull of badass with ease, which he did pretty damn well with Walk the Line. But I don't think that he would ever take on that role, not would his agent probably let him,but maybe he would if he just wanted to have fun as he is doing a rap thing on the side. And it could broaden his audience. As far as Ray park goes, he can do evil to an extent on screen, as we saw in The Phantom Menace, and did want to play Vegeta in 2002, so he could definitely be a prospect, I think. And as far as Vin Diesel goes, I don't think that he's a great actor, but he wouldn't have to be to pull off Tien because he's a minor character and due to the recent blowup success of Fast and Furious, he would be popular enough to be cast as Tien...I think. I don't think that he would take the role tho, but I didn't ever think that Chow Yun Fat would take Master Roshi, that was a complete surprise, so it could happen.

Nappa: Jason Statham

Why: Strong bald and dumb looking :P

Also, given his choices when it comes to roles, Dragonball is something he might actually do. Having martial arts experience helps as well.

However, if he was cast, I'd rule out Park as Vegeta as Statham has a better screen presence than Park does out of make up and the person playing Vegeta should be someone who has the charisma and strength to order someone like Nappa around.

Good ideas so far guys. One exception is Joaquin Phoenix. In case you haven't been keeping score, Joaquin has mentally left the building. He quit acting a year ago on the premise that he was going to become a Rap star. He now spends his time running around causing trouble and had Casey Affleck trailing him with a video camera so they can make a movie about his new life. Just more regular Hollywierdness. Lol!

As much as I love Jason Statham, I don't think he'd really be right as Nappa. Although he's ripped, he's actually a fairly small guy; I don't picture Nappa as being cockney either. ^o)

If the sequel to DBE is to be as short as the first film (or even if it was considerably longer), Nappa may well be reduced to a faceless, nameless, voiceless goon. If that's the case, then there's really only one option: Nathan Jones.

Oh yeah. :awe:

We would be Lucky to even have King Kai. Knowing how bad they messed up DBE I wouldn't get my hopes up about anyone for Z except Vegeta since he will most likely be in it.

yay! a sequel casting thread finally thanks :)

so... just thinkin', they should get more asian actors/actresses next time.
and give Stephen Chow a role. maybe also the director's chair.

that is scarcely discernible, hidden by abstruse words,
and accept as true all things that sweetly caress
the ear, and that are masked by a pleasant sound.

Well characters like Tien and Krillin would probably be asian.

Vegeta and Nappa are up for grabs and Raditz would be white since he's Goku's brother.

As for Chow, after the way he handled DBE I wouldn't want him anywhere near the sequel. Sure he didn't direct but he produced and freely admitted that he had little to do with the production, essentially just giving his name to it. Anyone who cares that little about it doesn't deserve to sit in the director's chair.

I don't know. I don't think that they would do that and then give the character to someone whose really dumb and goonish looking. He still has to look somewhat legit and give the character life and some relatabability because people should want to see him on screen, otherwise he might not as well exist. But since he's Vegeta's henchman, they would have to give him more character and depth than just a faceless goon. Or not, and just let Vegeta take over the screen, which is dangerous as the audience would inevitably be looking to Nappa for some entertainment, not nothingness brutality. People would say, goddamn that character is booring, I don't like this... if he still needs to be a goon, then atleast make him a purely bloodthirsty killer who has motivation and isn't just a brainless twit. Brainless twits are booring and reserved for tv lol. That's my opinion.

Character: Frieza
Actor: Željko Ivanek
Why: He's short, thin, bald, pale, and kind of scary looking. Moreover, he's an amazing actor. I think if I were writing the movie, instead of an oily, Anne Ramsey-sounding alien with a flying chair like in the anime, I'd have Frieza be a sociopathic yet charmingly relatable alien dictator/galactic CEO who's in the closet. Ivanek would pull it off.

Character: Android No.17
Actor: Vincent Kartheiser
Why: Despite looking too much like he could be Justin Chatwin's brother, he'd perfectly play No.17 as the college student hipster creep that he is with a bit of the slickness of Pete Campbell (his character in Mad Men where which he sounds a lot like the voice actor for No.17).

Character: Android No.18
Actor: Alexz Johnson
Why: She's blonde and can do robotic monotone as evidenced by Smallville, but is actually a pretty good actress. Very capable of pulling off No.18's trademark sarcasm, which she exuded a lot of in Instant Star and Devil's Diary.

I'd actually have Jet Li play Frieza. If Lethal Weapon 4 showed us anything it's that he makes an awesome bad guy, in fact he should take on villainous roles more often.

I'd worry a little about his acting abilities but one thing he does have is a kind of aura about him. You just know that guy could kick your ass. Frieza is the most powerful being in the known universe and you need someone who can portray that.

Oh and my real choice for King Kai is this guy:

Kurtwood Smith

Posted Image

The reason being that I would have King Kai be a kind of cranky of man with a wicked sense of humor who decides he's going to put Goku in his place when he arrives unannounced.
