so yeah, i went to see it again with a friend who had not seen it yet, and i found it better this time.
i realized a few things. First off, they didn't say "seven mystics created the dragonballs", at least not in the dub i saw

Second: they planned to make the movie so that it starts not-dragonballish-at-all and ends dragonballish, to introduce new audiences to it. they WANTED to make it start differently from dragonball, they did that on purpose.
That was their mistake. The fans are pissed, and the so called "new generation of kids" is not so vast, so instead of gaining money from new people, they lose it from long term fans.

then, i realized that the target audience is KIDS. not us. we're like 10 years older than the target audience.
it's a simple movie, that doesn't pretend to be great or deep, but just to entertain kids. it's a Spy Kids. not a Lord of the Rings.
And older, long term fans, who are in their 20s-30s believe that they are the target audience, but that's not like that.

it's for kids, people. face it.
Omnia enim stolidi magis admirantur amantque,
inversis quae sub verbis latitantia cernunt,
veraque constituunt quae belle tangere possunt
auris et lepido quae sunt fucata sonore.

Indeed, the stupid most admire and love all
that is scarcely discernible, hidden by abstruse words,
and accept as true all things that sweetly caress
the ear, and that are masked by a pleasant sound.

If I were a little kid I would love it. Anyone here ever see the Double Dragon movie? That was worse than this but I thought it was awesome. However, like I keep saying, there just wasn't enough buzz generated even among the target audience. Cartoon Network bringing the show back and doing commercials to tie it in might have been huge at getting new, young fans.

I just saw the movie. No. Thats all i must say. Boring story, no Kame house, they shoulda called the movie "Mystical Dragonballs". It had no feel. Being a member from the first ever board, i come to you heartbroken, for my 2000 dream of a great dragonball z movie has been replaced in 2009 by what seems a yuyuhakusho spoof.

A very good point,

they did have a strategy in this, they wanted to remake DB into something completely different, and the target audience after seeing the movie was indeed like for kids 10-12 years old...

So yeah, they wanted to create a new generation fans but I think they lost so much more real fans of the show with this...too bad

Even if it was meant for kids they still failed at that as well. Because the movie is so forgettable little kids are not going to remember it in a few months. It by no means created new fans in this new generation.

Posted my review yesterday in the pinned members review thread up top. Skewer me if you want to, but that's what I thought of it.

Would you guys have prefered a straight-up parody? As much as I love Dragonball, there is a lot that can be ridiculed and with a good comedy writer, it could have been pretty funny.

If the target audience really is just children, then Fox did a terrible job of advertising it towards that audience, just terrible.

I have a 10-year old little brother and he was not interested in the movie even the slightest bit. And he knows about the series from me. It just didn't spark his interest.

He did enjoy Monsters vs. Aliens though.

The biggest plot whole to me was the introduction of Piccolo. He just showed up. If I were doing it, I'd show Mai serving Pliaf who releases Piccolo to do his bidding. Piccolo refuses but offers Pilaf the chance to serve him. Pilaf furiously refuses, so Piccolo decides to kill him. Mai kills Pilaf before Picolo has the chance and pledges her allegiace to him. This would serve to introduce both characters and make Mai seem ruthless and evil.

^ Its awesome what they could have come up with if they actually sat there for more than five minutes to figure things out, huh?
