Warner Bros. has acquired rights to turn the Japanese manga series "Death Note" into a live-action film.

Studio has hired screenwriters Charley and Vlas Parlapanides to adapt.

Story centers on a college student who accidentally finds a misplaced "death note," infusing him with the power to kill merely by writing anyone's name on the page while picturing the person in his mind.

The 13-volume manga is a bestseller in Japan, and the film will be drawn from the first three installments, written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata for Shueisha Inc.

Warner Bros. Pictures Japan made three Japanese-language "Death Note" films. The new pic will be drawn from the manga, not the previous movies.

Vertigo's Roy Lee and Doug Davison will produce with Dan Lin's Lin Pictures and Brian Witten.

The scribes wrote "War of the Gods" for Relativity Media and "Live Bet" for Universal. ends

Kmccaskill, you're getting a warning. You have to stop the double posting and you've been told more than once to stop posting other LAA news in the DragonBall board.

Anyways, interesting timing for this news to come right after the third movie finished its run here. I wonder how quick they plan on getting this done.

Oh dear god.

Well, if he were to play L, you know the movie would make millions off of Twilight fangirls alone. :maffy:

I'm pretty excited for this. I'm also glad a competent studio got a hold of the rights instead of Fox who needs to stay far away from anime-to-film adaptations until Rothman exits the company.

Anyway, Warner Brothers have been on a streak lately and hopefully everything works out with their LAA (Death Note, Ninja Scroll, Akira).

Definitely good news! Can't wait for developments on this project.

ohh god help us here comes the whole race thing again.
while dragonball characters' ethnicity is quite uncertain, for DN i think that's not the case.

quoting:

When asked about L's nationality, Ohba responded saying "I think of him as a quarter Japanese, a quarter English, a quarter Russian and... maybe a quarter French or Italian? Something like that

and that, i think, is interesting.

on the other hand, Light is, as a matter of fact, Japanese.

so, unless this is an americanization / transposition (a la romeo+juliet, ya know?) i'd personally want actors with the proper ethnicity.

veraque constituunt quae belle tangere possunt
auris et lepido quae sunt fucata sonore.

Indeed, the stupid most admire and love all
that is scarcely discernible, hidden by abstruse words,
and accept as true all things that sweetly caress
the ear, and that are masked by a pleasant sound.

I'm not even gonna get into the race debate. If there's one thing I've learned from Dragon Ball Evolution it's anything's possible. I'll be cheering for this film since it seems it's in good hands.

Warner Bros gets a free pass on the race debate since they already produced a dn movie with Japanese actors,

Wb wants dn to be the next ring,

most likely light will be

Since there is already a Japanese version I am not caring so much about the ethnicity of the characters or cast: I'd kind of just like to see a plain old hollywood remake of this one.

Well they have to make a stand either way. The main focal point of much of the case, especially at the beginning, is that "kira" is in Japan. They can either go with that and keep the ethnicities true, or the more likely case, they will reverse it and make the whole thing based in the US. It just gets a little convoluted when they have to transpose the FBI investigation, flying to LA and back etc. etc. I have a feeling this is going to be tricky.

Potential Actor For Light Has His HollyWood Status Raised

After weeks of contract negotiations, the 'Gossip Girl' star
officially signs on to play the lead role in the musical remake.

Photo by Stephen Lovekin, Getty Images It's official! Chace Crawford
will star in the "Footloose" remake, Paramount Pictures confirms to
Usmagazine.com exclusively.

"Chace Crawford will play the lead role of Ren McCormack in the film
'Footloose'," Paramount told Us Tuesday.

The news is expected to be officially announced to trade publications
Wednesday morning.

See photos of stars on set.

The actor has been considering the part for some time but had yet to
officially sign until this week. He had been in contract negotiations
and was struggling to make filming work around his "Gossip Girl"
schedule, which is also due to start shooting its third season, a
source told Us.

Crawford was offered the lead role of Ren -- portrayed in the 1984
original by Kevin Bacon -- after Zac Efron dropped out of the project
in March.

Check out Chace's yearbook photo!

The "High School Musical" star said the film "sort of" wasn't a good fit.

"I want to grow a bit with the types of movies I want to make," he
said in April. "It was more along the lines that I was looking for a
new challenge, and this was another musical."

Find out what your favorite "Gossip Girl" stars looked like as kids.

"Footloose" will be produced and directed by "High School Musical"
alum Kenny Ortega.

Other stars who have auditioned recently for the movie, which is set
to begin shooting in March 2010, include Hayden Panettiere, Amanda
Bynes and "Dancing With the Stars" pro dancer Julianne Hough.

there is also internet buzz about him starring in the American remake
of death note

as a the lead, footloose could only raise his status in that regard
