I give this movie a C-.
There was a lot of corney parts and some parts of the movie it didn't even feel like dragonball.
i do understand High school part. It was a way to show how goku is and his ability.
Gokus costume was a bit bulky and they could have done a better job.

I do have to say that i like piccolo. He is green and mean/evil. CGI was good at some parts and some other was really bad.
Oozaru was bad, CGI on it were really bad, it didn't look like big gorila it was more like werewolf.(from 60's movies).

If they are going to make dbz (squeal) they got to make it more dbz, veteta and all of that crazy stuff.
In a way it was an epic fail(and im a big dbz fan).
Over all you can enjoy this movie, it for "kids" bit its a bit complex for little kids that they targeted, and for teens and adults its really corny.

I wish Michael Bay directed this movie.

I give it a B- and that's being fair.... With work done to the script it could have been a B+ or even an A-

I just got back from seeing the movie and I must say it’s not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I think the biggest problem with the entire film was the script. The story element itself was good, but the script seemed like it was a first or second draft and wasn’t fleshed out enough. It was weak and some of the dialog could have been better. It was definitely a victim of the writer’s strike. If they get someone else to pen the sequel, that should fix that problem nicely.

The second biggest problem was that Fox deemed it a smart idea to keep the release date up against the “Hannah Montana” movie. Every little girl in the U,S, got their parents to take them to see that this weekend for Easter. Nearly everyone coming into the theater tonight went to see that movie. DBE got butt raped by that film! Might have to rely on what the film makes during the week because next week the girls rule the theater again with Zac Efron in “17 Again”. DBE never had a chance against these films even if they pumped it up to a PG-13 or an R it would still have gotten bulldozed.

The only thing I could see that really felt out of place in this film was the Oozaru as Piccolo’s minion story. I think it could be explained away in the next film as perhaps a lie on Piccolo’s part when Goku’s true heritage is revealed. However, in this film it did explain why Goku changed under the eclipse because if he had just done so without explanation, it would have made no sense to the viewer. They got away with that in the anime because he had his tail, but here, even if he did have a tail, it would have made little sense without the full back story we got in the anime about the “big monster my Grandpa warned me about that comes out during the full moon” thing. There simply wasn’t time to work that in. There may not have been even if the film ran over two hours. Dragonball/Z/GT has so many little nitpicky details throughout they would need ten movies to tell everything. I once heard a great quote about live-action films like this. It said something like: you didn’t need to cram every last thing into the movie because that’s what the graphic novels are for! Seems a good point. The only real irritation I found about the whole Oozaru thing was the blatant mispronunciation of the word! Drove me nuts! Dumb Americans! Lol!

Now to the stuff I thought was good about the film. The characters were very well done. Goku was who he should have been. Innocent and naive, ditzy at times, just a bit cocky especially with Gohan and he matured toward being the hero we all know he will be. Bulma was sassy, confident, flirty with Yamcha and had her bad temper left in tact. Loved the scene with Roshi on the motorcycle. So Bulma and she still had a little bit of the fraidy-cat in her, (the scene where she didn’t want to go charging into the room where Chi-chi and Mai were fighting. “gotta find another way” and she splits. Perfect). Yamcha was his regular over confident self and I think Joon even sounded a lot like Sabat’s rendition of Yamcha. The only thing left out was his fear of girls, but again that would have made the film drag on a bit as one of those nitpicky extras. Gohan was good and Mai as the mostly silent assassin worked well. Roshi was a complete hoot! His was the most like his animated counterpart in the film with the exception of Piccolo. A goofy old man that was slightly disorganized, but could be wise when necessary, like when he told the back story of the Dragonballs, but when he got serious, he could kick your arse! I think Chow did a great job bringing Roshi to life. Piccolo was perfect. Marsters nailed the character cold, voice and all! It’s his favorite character, how could he do any less?

The fight scenes were well done. Lots of good choreography. Justin did very well for someone with no MA background. I especially liked Goku and Piccolo’s fight at the end. Lots of power and the airborne scenes were sweet. I love the way they shot Piccolo just hanging in the air with his arms crossed. It looked like a panel from the manga. Also liked the way they had the fighters not just land on the ground or stop when they hit something, but go right on through it, like Piccolo bursting through the stone columns after taking a hit, Piccolo crushing the ground in under his feet after he jumped down from the cliff, etc. Those little details were so important. There were quite a few of them in the movie that were taken directly from the stories. I also thought Gohan’s Zen garden with the seven stones that he drew the circle around was a nice touch, reflecting the seven Dragonballs coming together in one place.

The fx were good as well. The Oozaru transformation was well done. I thought he was what he should be. A big hulking monster with no self control and it wasn’t so huge it came off as ridiculous. Goku’s taking control and reverting back was directly taken from GT in his pre-SSJ4 form. Loved the explosion when the Ki blasts met in the final fight and the recreation of Goku charging right through the Ki blast to slam Piccolo in the chest was perfect. Piccolo tumbling down through the containment wave also looked fairly good as well. Some of the slo-mo shots may have been a little over done though. I expect more of that though in the next film as it can be used to denote super speed from a character especially as Goku’s improves through training and learns the Zanzoken.

I give this film a 7/10 and if the script had been more solid and fleshed out a bit better it would have garnered higher numbers.

i thought the ozaru was pretty lame, he ripped his clothes off and then when he transforms back his clothes are fine. Then they were thoses shots of the ozaru face in the flashbacks, kinds looked like a mask shoved into the camera.

Ki blasts i liked the most, i wonder if piccolo gets to use his sword on goku.

I know this is a late review seeing as how I watched the film 3 days ago in theaters and didn't have a fomulated reasonable opinion until now, but I think I should get this over with regardless.

Quote:

First off let me commend FOX for even trying. Even though their efforts(if any) were somewhat......abysmal, they did what no other studio had the guts to do and that's take on an icon and bring him to life; I respect them for that. If only it were a GOOD attempt.

To be blatantly straightforward, the movie was bad. There's no denying it wasn't very good, but I loved it. Say what you will about me but it was an attention grabber. To me there was never a dull moment, probably because things were moving so fast it didn't seem to drag much at all. It had the aspects of an instant hit but not the assets. Visually the movie was astounding; one scene I thought the CGI was top notch was the scene that shows Lord Piccolo disintegrating a lake in its entirety in an attempt to extract the Dragon Ball hidden within it. Considering what they had to work with, they did justice with most of the effects. Some weak spots in terms of CGI I thought was the emergence of the Dragon Temple, Oozaru's design in one of the flashbacks and his over all movement which looked really cheap and fake, and Shen long.

In terms of quality acting wise, it was okay. Jamie Chung did a good job in her role considering the utter redundancy of her character in this movie. Her fight scenes didn't do her many favors either. I mean, it just seemed like she was freestyle fighting; doing whatever came to her instinctively...at least to me. Strangely enough, Chi-Chi vs. Chi Chi may have been the best fight scene in the movie. Piccolo vs. Goku had potential but it was too short and Goku vs. Roshi was good but most of the time I had no idea who was throwing a punch. The camera work was so messy. Goku vs. Gohan wasn't so hot either but it ranks higher than the latter two.

Of course, Chow Yun Fat can save any film with his amazing acting. Being very much new to the films he's starred in I can't really compare his acting in DBE to any of his previous works, but speaking as a man who saw this movie I CAN say he gave his heart and soul into this character. In spite of the changes made to the character appeaerance wise, Roshi retained the charm, chicness and a little bit of the lechery that we came to know and love him for, well executed by Mr. Fat.

Emmy Rossum, well what can I say? The girl has got it going on! As Bulma she really released her inner bizzle; my favorite of her scenes being her debut at Gohan's house and her interaction with Goku. She was really one of the few that brought their character to life.

Joon Park....not much to say about him. I've seen tumbleweeds with more importance in a movie than Joon's character Yamcha. The only significance other being a martyr Yamcha served was to show just how much of the story they really did alter to draw in a new crowd of fans. Too bad it didn't work out.

Mai, played by Eriko Tamura had the potential to be the Vader to Piccolo's Sith Lord, alas, such an underused character got dragged down with the rest of the fodder. She only has about 2 lines in the entire movie so it wouldn't be fair of me to judge her when it comes down to acting. Mai on the other hand has very little history. Nothing is explained about where she comes from or how she ended up with Piccolo and I doubt we'll ever know seeing as how super saiyan Yamcha shot the bizzle. Still, the badass meter for her goes beyond that of even Piccolo considering how she was able to take out the mighty Goku, something even Piccolo in all his vengeful glory couldn't do.

Justin Chatwin who plays the legendary icon himself, Goku, put on a great performance at the beginning of the film that slips near the middle then rises back to greatness then slips again and finally shines at the conclusion of the final battle. As the story progresses and you get to know just who Goku is, small traits of the character himself appear to blossom in Chatwin and he literally becomes Goku. He really does an awesome job, better than most fan speculated. Sadly, Goku was watered down so much. The most Goku-like scene in the whole movie was the scene with Chatwin eating a turkey leg. But he did good.

Above everyone else, James Marsters did the best job on his character. King Piccolo is such an underrated villan. He was ruthless and two-timing which in all fairness wouldn't explain Lord Piccolo in DBE but the concept of his character was to be badass and evil which Marsters pulled off flawlessly.

The fight choreography was decent to say the least and the wire work was meh. A lot of scenes where wire work was done made it boldly obvious the actors were on wires. Such scenes for example would be the Gohan vs. Goku fight. Goku lunges a slow kick at his grandfather and as he's sent hurling towards him, it looks like he's a Christmas ornament on a clothes line. This sad attempt at action is repeated at the very end where Goku and Chi-Chi clash into each other. I shameully facepalmed at the sight. It's like the actors weren't even trying to be convincing that they were leaping at each other in mid-air. Poor direction I suppose.

The dialogue in the movie was utterly atrocious. It enforced every cliched line in every comic book you've ever read. "I'm going to defeat you." " I will have my vengeance!" sure these lines are acceptable when used in the proper context but they just weren't delivered believably. Again, poor direction on top of a poor script=instant failure.

The film is very flawed but none of that mattered to me much. It was Dragon ball so I could forgive the mistakes and.....well downright grotesqueness of its existence. I loved it for its entertainment value and it's colorful cast. I would definately appreciate a sequel and would love to see everyone return for DBZ.....excpet Wong and Ramsey.

So for me, DBE deserves a 5.5/10.

Well I'm sleepy so I will stop right here for the moment. Later folks.

My review:

It sucks.

As an adaptation, it sucks.
As a movie, it sucks.
As a way to dispose of a few bucks that you don't want to spend in something worthy, it sucks. This is possibly the most painful way of wasting money that I can think of.

I can't believe I'm agreeing with DBZGokussj4 on this, but yeah, I wish Michael Bay had directed this movie; him and many more directors could have done a movie that was at least decent. Even the Wachowski Brothers...DBE made Speed Racer look like Raging Bull. This movie is at Uwe Boll or Ulli Lommel level.

I'm going to write a serious review later on but right now, after a long day, all I can say is that I f***ING HATE THIS STUPID MOVIE!!!! f*** YOU, MOVIE!!!!!

and the green guy in the 5th panel is not piccolo! no wait... nevermind, he is.

Reptile’s review

Hello,

I think I’ts time for my own personal review. After some serious moments of doubt and after already seeing the 70 minute short version I decided to see the final version also in theatres.

Here it comes,(take a moment to read all of it)

I watched the movie with very low expectations (because I already saw the short version of the movie on my laptop). So what do I think of it as final result?

Well, the movie was entertaining, and the only way to say this is when you have absolutely no reference of DB in your head when watching this movie. If you only compare this the slightest bit with what you had in mind then you will be really disappointed about this adaptation.

So, yeah as final result I can say that it wasn’t at all what I had in mind. I think everything is already said about the movie as comment, but let me add some positive notes to this one for a change(to balance the movie’s negative’s reviews).

What did I like about the movie?

The intro! After seeing the movie the intro was the best scene. It had me at the edge of my seat (and wasn’t included in the 70 min short version). The visual effects where good, seeing glimps of Piccolo creating chaos all over the planet while Gohan tells about how they sealed the demon into the Mafuba…that was pretty good, also because it was the right way to start. Too bad after this it wasn’t that exciting.

I liked the scene where Goku had to practice the kamehamehe wihile Chi Chi was there to give him a motivation for using the kamehamea. Don’t get me wrong, the scene shouldn’t be in it, but I felt the same chills as Chatwin when Chi Chi was looking at him while explaining the rules (Goku could take one step towards chi chi when he lit a candle). I think I would fire a hundred candles in his place…I liked it just because Chi chi looked so incredibly fine. That was a fun improvised scene I thought.

The scene after the credit I liked also. Yeah, the funny thing was that the movie itself was so rushed, and now the last scene after the credits looked like it was going to stick forever. It was an Asian woman preparing something in the kitchen and then walked through the corridor into a bedroom to see that Piccolo was lying in the bed. Together with the intro those were the scenes I really looked forward to see what was coming.

The bad

Now for the bad…I keep it short to say that most of the negative comment was right. The movie was rushed, the plot was not very solid, the actors didn’t really resemble the manga/anime…

My biggest complaint for the movie was that there were so much unnecessary scenes in a film of about 85 minutes. They already had a short length and still they added lots of unnecessary scenes like the cave with Fulum assassins. Instead of this they could add more narrative time to explain everything…

The actors were trying to pull of something but again, I didn’t had the feeling they really resembled any of them. Chatwin(Goku) was indeed too much of an insecure emo kid. That’s good when you play Peter Parker, but Goku never had issues about “fitting in with the popular guys” and such. So that’s what I mean, they added so much scenes that really made a whole different character of who Goku is. I remember Dragonball was based of the book “Yourney To The West”. Now the movie (especially the beginning) looks more like a combined episode of Dawson’s Creek versus Buffy The vampire Slayer.

Also Bulma, I couldn’t stop comparing her with Lara Croft. She always had those guns with her so she was more like a shooting maniak then this “over sensitive” girl Bulma was supposed to be. Yamcha was ok in the start but after the first five minutes he was about the most useless character in the movie. It’s sad Yamcha is not a fighter as well…

Piccolo, although Marsters seemed very passionate about his character, was not really that scary to me. The make up and the way he acted made me think about him as his role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (that’s probably why they picked him for the role). Piccolo is my favourite character so I want this character to be really good. Instead he wasn’t in the movie for long in and I was disappointed that he wasn’t the outrageous character he was in the anime. He held back a little too much, like he wanted to be as cool as Dracula. So expected more then this. And what was the whole idea of Piccolo anyway? Piccolo was the negative side of Kami San (or maybe a split personality with kami San or something) but it was all so much changed and not explained very well. In the movie it was Piccolo and oozaru who conquered the planet 2000 years ago. Doesn’t this raise a lot of questions? Like who was that Oozaru 2000 years ago? And how the hell he could know that Goku was coming etc…what a mess…

So now I come to my final point. What is left of the original DB? I have read many articles about a sequel but…a sequel of what? To go further on the Piccolo part, does FOX have any idea how much they changed his character, the essence of Oozaru and even the Dragonballs (created by the earth’s guardian)?

I can’t even imagine how they will continue with DBZ if there’s no Kami San, Tien, Chauzu and Krillin. Think about it, everyone will be like “yeah we’re going to see the Z- gang yeah!!”….but what Z-gang? The only real gang that will stand in front of Vegeta and Nappa will be Gohan and Piccolo (and Goku on who’s on his way). This is only one example and sure FOX will find a way to click it all together but this will screw around the plot even more then they already did.

So, I have the feeling that director James Wong didn’t had a slightest clue what he was doing. Wong probably wanted to go into DBZ but soon realised something like “what? There are a whole bunch of episodes called Dragonball??”. This was probably how it went and why the movie was a mess. It’s obvious when watching the interviews of the DBE crew that everyone was speaking about how much they wanted to go into DBZ instead of talking about Dragonball itself. Also Marsters in an interview, when explaining who Piccolo was, gave his version of Piccolo like there was no Dragonball at all (not one mentioning of kami San). It seemed they all wanted to get over Dragonball as soon as possible.

To conclude, enjoy this film as it is a movie on itself but to accept this as an adaptation of a top manga series? No way, this was hardly an adaptation, this was a lousy excuse to make a bridge for Dragonball Z. Sorry Fox, if you want to go into Dragonball Z, make sure you make the right fundament for it.

Score 2/5

I just saw it, I'm not gonna get to deep with this.
I didn't get bored with the movie, but I am not sure if that was because the movie was actually "funny" enough or because it was so short that it doesn't give you the time to get bored. Let's stay with the first option to give it some tiny credit, there was some few scenes that made me smile.
But that's the thing, the movie is TOO DAMN FAST, so fast that makes every scene looks ridiculous and forced. there's absolutely NO story development. It is obviously a movie for kids, 9 years old or younger, and kids who doesn't know dragonball, by the way.

The special effects are lame, pathetic, awful. the ki, the kamehame ha, the flying (oh my god the flying), ozaaru, everything looks awful. yeah, the budget, I know.

The fights.... the fights? oh yeah, there were some "fights". those "fights" sucked, badly. too shorts and badly done.

and what is wrong with their movements!? why do they move their arms like that to make the kamehame-ha

As adaptation, this is the WORST adaptation EVER made, not even jean claude's street fighter or mortal kombat where so badly adapted, it is an insult to db fans, a lame excuse to make some money (are they making enough money anyway?), it has absolutely nothing to do with dragonball.
I paste here a line that resumes that: "calling it 'Dragon Ball' is an insult to the fans. this means that other generations will see this crap and pre-assume that we liked crap. "

The movie is a shame, is a waste of a big oportunity to make a GREAT franchise. they screwed it, totally.

2 of 5, just because I didn't get (too much) bored.
Please Fox, mr. wong, and ramsey, don't you touch dragonball ever again. You made a terrible job.

Was this the DragonBall movie we the fans had been hoping for? No.
Would it have been better had it been longer, stayed with the source material, and had a better script and director? Yes.

This is by no means a great movie. But it is not the worst movie ever made either. Overall the cast did pretty well considering what they had to work with. A cast is often only as good as the script and direction they are given. Though not much can help a bad script, and the script is what I feel is the weak link for this movie.

I went in with rather low expectations, but I didn't feel as though I had wasted my money when I after the movie was over and I left. The Goku vs. Piccolo fight had the potential to be EPIC but was just far too short it felt like a GT battle rather than that of DragonBall or Z. I liked the look of the CG although the Ki blasts looked too light and airy for lack of a better term, especially the Kamehameha.
