How about if they actually will reboot the series in the future, make a 99% faithful adaptation?

Patton Oswald said it best. "And no, the movie will not have EVERY LITTLE ELEMENT FROM THE GRAPHIC NOVEL. That's why the graphic novel exists -- you can go read it after you see the movie. Adaptation. Parallel visions. When you adapt a book, you cut things out, combine and conflate, streamline and linger. L.A. CONFIDENTIAL stands as the best Ellroy adaptation to date, and it throws away massive chunks of the novel's narrative. THE BLACK DAHLIA slavishly sticks to its source material and it's almost un-watchable." That's why not. @kmccaskill: Cinderella meets Al Qaeda? No, just no. |

Minus talking animals, Pilaf, dinosaurs. By the time you take out a lot of the stuff that's necessary to make a good movie you already have a lot of reworking to do. I don't think Pilaf could be the main vilain of a movie but I think the story of how Goku meets Bulma and how the adventure begins is an important starting point. That means you have to re-write the begining with the Red Ribbon Army or Piccolo as the main threat (the latter of which, they obviously chose). Then there are obviously some issues with style you have to change when making an adaptation. Unless this reboot focused on the Red Ribbon Army, it would probably end up facing a lot of the issues that evolution faced so the makers wouldn't have to reinvent the wheel. Take Goku out of high school and make him about 15. Make his hair less gelled looking and more air blown and wild. Really play up the energetic and exited side because I haven't seen Chatwin convey that in any of the released footage. (not blaming him though) Have Krillin arrive to train under Roshi at about the same time Goku and Bulma come looking for his dragonball. He's kind of a jerk at first but evntually becomes close friends with goku. Chi-chi could be similar to he original anime version and posess one of the dragonballs. My version of Tien would be very different origin wise. He's the body guard of emperor Chiaozu(kind of a cameo). Tien family have been the body guard of the royal family for years and have passed down the ancient crane technique of martial arts. After Piccolo attacks and steals Chiaotzu's dragonball (maybe kills him) Tien vows to track him down. Eventually he comes into contact with Goku and the gang. Yamcha and Bulma can stay basically the same. Improve the looks a bit though. I think all this would make a movie that's a little over 2 hours. It's a big ensemble, but it worked in Lord of the Rings which brings me to another point. Make it feel epic! I'm sorry but Rule doesn't sound like a song that should play with a movie about the fate of the world being at stake. I want that great fantasy feel like Chronicles of Narnia since this would be a kid's movie. Now that I've written all that, it kind of feels like we're back to where we were before with story ideas and all that. |

You don't take what made the novel popular in the first place and ditch it. The way you make it sound they could of based LOTR in Ancient Rome and it would of been fine because its to "out there" to be adapted to " general audiences". Edited by Superraizen, Mar 15 2009, 07:42 PM.

I dont think the DragonBall/Z story is so complex that a completely accurate adaptation would become unwatchable. What's the point of rebooting if they don't make it completely faithful? If LOTR can have talking trees then DB can sure as hell have talking animals and shapeshifting pets. With DBE we get a movie that's not very faithful in order to "appeal to a wider audience", so it would only make sense for a possible future reboot to go in the complete opposite direction and follow the source material closely with the goal of pleasing the fans (if done right I'm sure it will be appreciated by a wider audience). The only "problem" with this is that altogether they would need say 6 or 7 movies to cover all of DB(Z) and thats even with condensing the sagas and leaving some less important stuff out. I still believe the perfect thing would be if they started out with a DBZ film about the Saiyan saga (and then the rest of the z) and then bring out prequels that tell the story of DB. |

the only way to make a faithful dragonball movie would be to start with z and have flash backs of kami, piccolo jr, and goku then once you have the public hooked you make the weirdest dragonball movie Edited by kmccaskill, Mar 15 2009, 07:53 PM.

Thank you. Epic like Lord of the Rings and Narnia. I have been fighting that statement for a long freakin' time. Did they cram LOTR into 89 minutes? No. Narnia? No. HARRY POTTER?? No. Dragonball can be epic for kids and adults too. Just because Dragonball started out as a graphic novel and in Shonen Jump rather than a really long novel with few to no pictures doesn't mean it can't be done just as well. Dragonball has a tank load of information just as the other stories do. There's murder, talking animals, shape-shifting, fantasy, adventure, morals being learned, etc. All of the books and stories have it. I'd love an accurate reboot. |

Get Stephen Chow to direct it and have the chreography from The Forbidden Kingdom... I just think Stephen Chow should just take the balls and make a Dragonball movie, he's just perfect for it, just watch Kung Fu Hustle and you'll think if he can bring that same production in a Dragonball movie it will be awesome. It has comedy, great fights, and nice cinematography. Have the same production company who worked on Star Wars combined with LOTR's, basically, everybody minus Fox could work.... |

Roland Emmerich would do a great job. It would get the right length and the fight fx not over do or under do. |

why does Dragonball need to be a serious movie. Stephen Chow is good for this because he knows how to combined the campy comedy we love in Animes with great action. Dragonball doesn't need to be series, it needs to be on the same level as Kung Fu Hustle. Watch Kung Fu Hustle and you'll see what I mean. |
