I.G Confirms License of Jin-Roh's Live-Action Rights

Production I.G Vice-President Maki Terashima-Furuta acknowledged at her company's Anime Expo panel on Sunday that "somebody has the live-action rights, and somebody was planning to make a live-action Jin-Roh, but at the moment, I have no comment." Terashima-Furuta was responding to a question about whether more works will be made in the Kerberos saga, a multimedia franchise developed by award-winning creator Mamoru Oshii (Mobile Police Patlabor, Blood: The Last Vampire, Avalon, Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai). The Kerberos name refers to a fictional paramilitary group that Oshii has portrayed in radio dramas, live-action films, novels, manga, and the Jin-Roh anime film.

Bandai Entertainment and Viz Media collaborated on the North American release of Jin-Roh in movie theaters and on DVD. Set in a riot-torn alternate-world version of 1950s Tokyo, the film's story follows a special operations police officer who is haunted by the memories of a girl. Hiroyuki Okiura directed off a script that Oshii wrote.

I'm not sure how to feel about this, to be honest. I make no secret of how highly I regard Jin-Roh: it's an effing masterpiece and one of my favourite films ever. But when you consider how close the original was to live-action cinematography anyway, isn't an adaptation kind of redundant?
