Viz Pictures, the live-action film affiliate of Viz Media, has announced that it has licensed the North American theatrical and DVD distribution rights to NTV's live-action film trilogy version of Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys manga. In the award-winning suspense manga's story, a man realizes that calamities cropping up around the world have eerie similarities to idle plans he and his childhood friends made decades ago.

After earlier screenings in film festivals, Viz Pictures will run the first film in the trilogy at the grand opening of the New People theater in the J-Pop Center in San Francisco on August 15.

Viz Pictures will release the first two films on DVD later this year, followed by the third film next year. (The third film will not open in Japanese theaters until August 29. Viz Media will publish the fourth volume of the original manga in North America next month. In Japan, the manga has sold over 20 million copies.

Friggin awesome, I've been wanting to see these movies for a long time. I'd planned on buying the manga before, but unfortunately they were kind of expensive. I think I will spend some money on getting the DVDs though, and hopefully they'll have it airing in major cities around the country like they did with Death Note.
