Image edited by midori Dear creature (since I'm not sure if you're a human or a monster or an animal or something pretending to be another), I throw my arms as a symbol of "thankfulness" for visiting this oasis. But just so I know who's specifically knocking at our oasis's front door, do you mind if you register or log in? You're currently wandering outside our oasis as a ghost. This means your face is unrecognizable and you are limited to certain areas of our oasis and there are some abilities you don't possess. If you become one of us, you'll be able to access monster-only sections, and use many monster-only features such as having a slimy profile, sending monsterosas letters, and a lot more. Monsterification is simple, fast, and completely free. Do you have what it takes to become a monster? ![]() If you're already a monster here then please slobiverate your details below in order to access all the features you deserve: (Plus, you'll get rid of this annoying reminder.) |

I know that a good deal of us write stories. Let's talk about our work, swap with each other tips/critiques/etc, and whatever is appropriate for this thread. Just don't get too woobie, please; we only intake so much sugar. |

I'm in love with this thread! I've been writing stories since I was five, the first of which involved a king turning into a tree in a forest, but you didn't need to know that. Synonyms for "said"? The thesaurus, at least the one included with Word, has been my best friend for since I started making stories. And from at least 12 years of using it I know these work: speak utter declare state tell remark Other variations: cry yell exclaim mention answer reply |

Those are good. My advice is just to not eliminate "said" entirely. The rule to eliminate "said" because it is so "boring" is really stupid- as Stephen King put it in "On Writing ," people brush through "said" because we always see it- this helps make reading from passage to passage easier. It's very much okay to use non-"said" tags, just don't use them too much because when overused they disturb reading flow and weaken dialogue impact. Keep most of them "said" when you do use tags. |

Okay then, thanks Cezille. And thanks, Kady, for the advice. "On Writing" contains a lot of tips for writers? |

Sorry for double posting, but I just found this line in this article: "An Indonesian fisherman was in March mauled to death by a Komodo dragon after he ventured into a remote island sanctuary for the giant killer lizards." Wow, that sounds awkward to my "ear appeal" and me. It sounds like March is a location, huh? IMO, it would make better sense to me if it was placed at the beginning of the sentence at the very least. |

It's a memoir of sorts, but over half of the book is about Stephen King giving advice about grammar and stuff in a pretty funny manner. I like it. I'd also recommend buying "Elements of Style." King also uses it a lot to prove his points in "On Writing." |

Hmm, interesting. You're right. Sorry if I'm being stupid but if I'm hearing the line instead, I might have thought the fisherman was marching. |
