Dear creature (since I'm not sure if you're a human or a monster or an animal or something pretending to be another),

I throw my arms as a symbol of "thankfulness" for visiting this oasis. But just so I know who's specifically knocking at our oasis's front door, do you mind if you register or log in?

You're currently wandering outside our oasis as a ghost. This means your face is unrecognizable and you are limited to certain areas of our oasis and there are some abilities you don't possess. If you become one of us, you'll be able to access monster-only sections, and use many monster-only features such as having a slimy profile, sending monsterosas letters, and a lot more. Monsterification is simple, fast, and completely free.

Do you have what it takes to become a monster?

If you're already a monster here then please slobiverate your details below in order to access all the features you deserve: (Plus, you'll get rid of this annoying reminder.)

So where can we learn new words aside from the dictionary?

I say the best way to learn any language is to get involved in its literature. Read a good novel every now and then, every week if you like. You'll get a lot of new words and see how words can be used together to get dramatic effects. Whenever I read, the style rubs off me somehow and for a while I can write in that author's style. When that wears off, I read another book.

Or a quicker way: Thesaurus. A dictionary-thesaurus software, like the one that comes with Encarta, is very helpful for quick reference.

Dangit, you beat me...

I was also going to add SAT books since they are loaded with vocabulary, but then realized it was an American thing. You would have to buy them online and that's not always convenient.

There's also non-SAT books that contain vocabulary. They're kinda like specialized dictionaries, only with larger text. I find them okay since they're mostly words I already know, but occasionally you find some you never even heard of.

(Oh yeah, I also forgot free rice.com- it tests your vocabulary!)

Oh, and I would not recommend just randomly choosing a word out of the Thesaurus to replace another word. The replaced word looks awkward and it's often obvious that you just pulled it out of your you-know-what. Learn how to use the word properly first, then try it out (kinda like what you did with "hunch").

Okay, thanks.

You gave me that site last time. I don't like it much, to be honest, but thanks anyway. I might visit it again someday, however.

I agree, but if you know the words already and are just looking for a different term to replace an overly-used one, anything from a Thesaurus will do good enough.

Yeah, a prolific vocabulary is important. That's the beauty of English- it has 1 million words and counting (German, which is second in word count, has 500,000-600,000+). "Big" can also be "huge," "obese," "elephantine," "humongous," "large," "jumbo," "the size of a whale..." ^^

I use a thesaurus when I know a better word that I already know for something, have it on the tip of my tongue, and need to remind myself of what it is. My thesaurus is also a dictionary (it's one of those combo types), so sometimes I also use it to double check that I'm using a word properly. It can help me realize that I'm not using it in an appropriate situation.

I don't get why people are so scared of dictionaries.
