Heres my short story of what I did... I bought my first thirdgen... good condition compleltly stock...
I got the h.p crave and got a thirdgen with a 350 and a 5 speed 3.73 rear... TONS of fun... but the body looked like crap. I end up blowing the rear and the tranny and pulling the engine out and saving it.
I realized that I wanted to build my own NICE car so I sold the body to the junkyard and SEARCHED for a good condition body i.e no rust and good/ new paint.
I found my car for $2200 compleltly stock w/ very nice paint.
I think that either way I spent WAYYY too much money on my car but I love it.

You have to ask yourself do you want looks or speed or both??? It costs alot of money and time to paint a car that is why I bought my car already painted. Most of the $1000 cars you see dont have good paint... IMO they would just be decent daily drivers.

Of course. 3k-4k can get u a really nice and fast one, especially given todays economy. Its not really worth putting money into a TBI in my opinion.

I agree merick. Ask anyone who has built a FAST thirdgen... it is much cheaper to buy one that is already done... That is why I never plan on selling mine.

i cant aford 2 cars the insurence alone would b runnign me 600 a month because of my age...as far as what i need is a daily drivier id rather go fast then look preety...in my mind if a cars got body rust and shit paint i can deal if its fast. in a perfect world id like 300hp or so (with some some cheep and easy mods still to b done) in somthing dependabel.

also i know shit about cars in the world of enthueset...and id b more comfortabel messing with body panels then the engine/drivetrain

Rust is not just cosmetic... it can question the structual integrity of a vehicle...

Maybe find a strong running TPI or carb'ed car that may not look look pretty? Like Dennis said, if you pick one car, do you want looks speed or both, that's the question ya know. But always choose bad paint and dents over rust!

there are deals out there there is an 86 Z28 for sale by me for 850$ neg the body isnt too bad 59 k original but it has been sitting for a long time and as of right now it doesnt run, but flush the fluids and who knows I was thinking of offering $500 and playing around with it maybe to flip for a few dollars for the TA, look around there are quite a few f bodys sitting around Levittown right by you, theres an 88 Formula too no plates, im thinking of leaving a note on it, I look all the time they are out there, craigslist special interest newsday and of course ebay, I agree with merrick also a TBI car prob isnt worth dumping the cash into, i sold my 87 Iroc 5.7 car with ttops and a whole bunch of rare options for $3500 and it only need a little body work on the 1/4 panel and the nose needed to be sparyed, the cars are out there and at least to me looking is a lot of fun,,
