>Hey people...I'm starting to get squeeling noise from the trannie when I stop and have my foot on the clutch. This doesn't happen all the time and happens only when I have the clutch pedal down. Some say it's the pilot bearing and some say it's the throwout bearing...well, which is it....and, will it damage anything if I delay replacing it? The clutch and trannie are fine...no slipping and no noise. I'd hate to have to drop everything just for the little pilot bearing!!! |

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/clutch2.htm do this test: Clutch Diagnostic Test If you find that your clutch has failed, here is an at-home diagnostic test that anyone can perform: 1)Start your car, set the parking brake, and put the car in neutral. 2)With your car idling, listen for a growling noise without pushing the clutch in. If you hear something, it's most likely a problem with the transmission. If you don't hear a noise, proceed to step three. 3)With the car still in neutral, begin to push the clutch and listen for noise. If you hear a chirping noise as you press, it's most likely the clutch release, or throw-out bearing. If you don't hear a noise, proceed to step four. 4)Push the clutch all the way to the floor. If you hear a squealing noise, it's probably the pilot bearing or bushing. If you don't hear any noise during these four steps, then your problem is probably not the clutch. If you hear the noise at idle and it goes away when the clutch is pressed, it may be an issue in the contact point between the fork and pivot ball. all in all I think if you dont feel your clutch slilpping or hear any grinding, then your clutch should be fine..but then again you dont want your bearing or bushing to fail...

Thanks, Manny.....the stupid thing is....it doesn't happen all the time. I could go for days driving in the city with no squeeling, but then it'll happen all of a sudden when I push in the clutch pedal. Your checklist is real handy, though.....thanks, Stan |

Hey Manny...I just went by SK and talked to Brian there....he helped me with my rebuild of my T-5. He says it's probably the throwout bearing installed wrong in the shift fork....Says it won't do anything except wearout. He said pilot bearings don't make noise.....Well, we'll see when I have to replace the clutch down the road.... |

how many miles do you have on your tranny? so he said pilot bearing make no noise eh?? he is full of shit and needs to read up on his trannies...I fcuking hate it when people say stupid shit that they know nothing about!!! Sorry man nothing against you, I just hate it when people dont know what they are talking about..Did I mention I hate SK? they overprice everything and they dont know shit on top of that..Sorry man..had to vent  but yeah..look anywhere on the net, they all say the same thing..I was actually gonna say that you can try greasing it up, cause I heard people do that....but personally I dont dabble with manual trannies, slushboxes are my specialty.. http://www.aa1car.com/library/2003/bf50332.htm CLUTCH NOISE Squeals and growls are usually caused by worn or seized bearings. Chirping noises are usually caused by vibration somewhere in the clutch actuator mechanism. Causes Of Internal Clutch Noise Include: Worn or defective input shaft bearing; Defective or misaligned release bearing; Worn, misaligned or improperly lubricated pilot bearing/bushing; Worn, bent or improperly lubricated release fork; Worn input shaft; Improper disc installation; Misalignment; Damaged bearing retainer; Loose flywheel bolts; and Damaged disc splines, worn stop pins or broken damper. |

hahhaaa...sorry man.. I have that affect on people... shit if it only happens intermitantly then i would prob say leave it..could be an occasional dry bearing...screw it I say leave it..and once you feel it slipping then just go for the whole kit and kaboodle.. |
