I have some C5 wagon wheels...I know they're ugly, but they were cheap! I want to paint them black just to see how they'd look on my car.....1) How can I tell if the gelcoat is still on them?; 2) Can I rattle can them, even with the gel coat on?; 3) How do I strip them of gelcoat?

They would probably look terrible.

Use aircraft stripper to strip the clearcoat.

Before you paint them, if you have tires already throw them on and see if you like them without it painted...
Aircraft stripper is correct to strip it.
Take some pics :)

Thing with Aircraft stripper, apply it with a brush and go in one direction. Also, dont let that shit get on your hands. It burns like a bitch.

there is no need to strip the wheels, they are clearcoated from the factory, thre for you just need to sand them with 320 grit sandpaper and go over it with a scuff pad, clean them and wipe them down with a wax and grease remover and paint them black, if you dont have access to a air compressor and a paint gun, duplicolor sells wheel paint, and that is what you should use.

>Thanks for that, A....I'm gonna do that and hopefully have it done in time for the next meeting. Yea, rattle-can painting is all I can do for now....can I use brake cleaner to de-grease?

Yah, I sprayed my powersteering box with a spray can, when I was trying to find my oil leak the other day i sprayed it with brake clean and it came off like it was nothing. I have a feeling the high temps under the hood and the brake clean was a bad combination. :idk:
Long story short, dont use brake clean.

Well I preped it pretty good, I sanded it down and all, then I put about 3 coats of high temp spray and a coat of engine enamal clear coat... I spray brake clean on my engine and it doesnt come off... I dont know why it came off my power steering resivor.
