Not really, the shifter itself is a pretty simple mechanical piece.

If you shift the shifter all the way back (into 1st gear) and look on the front of the shifter, you will see a little flat piece of metal, take needle nose pliers/ screwdriver/ something to pull that pin out. it looks like a giant staple when you pull it out.
After you do that, take the handle off by just simply pulling up.
See if anything is broke/stuck...

Probably some cable behind there. Wait for dennis... thats going to be a bitch to fix though. Better off just leaving it the way it is.

There is a cable that the key locks and unlocks... it is possible that is broke, i didnt realize you said it does it with the key out.
You might need to take the center console out to see what auctually happened...

Okay, now it sounds like you have two seperate problems with one shifter...
Yes, if you take the thing out you can put it back just as easily...

Try pulling the shifter knob off. In the front of the knob theres a retaining clip that looks like a giant staple. Use a flat head or a pick to get it out. Then lift the shifter off. Inspect the button assembly. On the shifter shaft there should be a white plastic stalk in it. Check if you can press it down and have it come back up by itself. If it doesnt do that the spring may be jammed on the shifter assembly. You will have to take the shifter plate out and inspect it down there. It isnt hard to do.

EDIT: Forgot to read the thread. I only read the first three posts. Sorry.
