My rear end has always had a slight whine to it, but today, I noticed something new driving back from a friend's house. Above 65, there's a high pitched whine coming from the back of the car. It's not that loud but it's noticeable and different from the whine I've always had. It's speed sensitive, and stops when I let go of the gas, starts when I step on the gas again. Below 60, it's not there. My guess is, I either have a rear axle bearing on the way out, or a rear pinion bearing that's dying. Am I on the right track? |

Turn up the volume on the stero. More likely a ring and pinon gear. My fourth gens rear is kinda loud. Having a shop rebuild the rear is likely to be alot of money. When i fix my fourth gen im just gunna get a whole rear out of a wrecked ss. I also reserached rebuilding it myself. Apparently thats something you dont really want to do becuase it takes an experienced mechanic and specialty tools and if you fuckup you wind up having to replace the gears again. Those gears can be expensive too. |

>You're def. losing the preload on the pinion gear....that's why the whine goes away with no torque applied....with torque the gear moves up the ring gear and to a new gear mesh angle causes noise. The crush sleeve is probably the problem. |

So what kind of repair am I looking at in that case Stan? Is it safe to assume that the LSD carrier is OK and I may end up having to just change the crush sleeve and pinion bearing? Or will I have to rebuild this sucker? |
