My friend has a 92 Chevy Camaro RS that he is selling and I am considering buying it, but he says that the tranny doesn't shift into 3rd or 4th gear, it just open revs as if its in neutral. Does anyone know what could be wrong.

After doing a little search I found some possibilities of whats wrong.

3/4 clutch pack = rebuild time
Low Fluid
A stuck valve in the valve body
TV cable
TV is stuck

I am probably still gonna buy it but i'm hoping its no big deal so I can get it on the road right away.

When I blew my tranny it had no 3rd or 4th... I ended up going with a 700HP rated 700R4...

Thanks, i'll just assume that it is blown and save for another one.

I just talked to him to get further information and he says if he revs it towards redline it will shift into 3rd.

Then I would say the TV cable needs adjustment or that tranny just needs a good cleaning.

I was thinking either the tv cable or the valve that the cable hooks to is stuck open.

Either way, if he keeps driving with crazy pressure its gunna really mess up the tranny... I would take the pan off an inspect the cable and the valve on the inside that the cable connects to. Also, before doing that DOUBLE check on the amount of oil in there. I have read that fluid levels on these transmissions is critical to tranny life and even a half qt low can take years off these trannys and cause strange pressure behavior.
If he has time, he can hook a pressure gauge up to the transmission to check pressures.

Im gonna just wait till I get it to check it out. Right now he doesn't drive it and I don't think its at his house so I don't wanna bother him to go check anything, but i'm pretty sure its not gonna be that hard to figure out the problem. Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate the help.

also check to see if the tranny fluid smells burned or looks burned (brown) that could mean you have worn clutches or bands...
