As most of you know i am in the process of changing my gears to 3.42. What I need to know is whatis the advantage to changing the Differential Cover to one of these: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TFS-8510400/?image=large Or is the stock cover just fine. (Yes the obvious is the drain and fill plugs) |

the stock cap flexes under load and this one doesn't ... also it provides more support for the pinion... it basically structurally supports ur rear end better.. |

It depends how much power youre looking to put down. Ive seen built 10 bolts handle up to 800HP, Ive also seen them blow out under a stock LB9. I have the LPW girdle. So far so good. But next season i might be calling on Mr Moser. |

I have one for my rear... I had to notch the stock panhard bar to fit, and eventually I bought a tubular adjustable PHB... |

Another factor to consider is that the lower the number rear gear you use, the stress on the drivetrain goes up....especially if you like to step on it from first gear on. If you picture trying to start pedalling a bicycle with the chain on the smallest rear gear...it's difficult! You have to stand on the pedals to really start moving. So you have a high po motor and a beefed up trans...guess what's taking the strain when you hammer on your 3.23 or 2.73 gear from a standing start? Beefing up that rear is important....and that aluminum cover is great! Plus it has a larger fluid capacity which keeps the gears running cooler. I would also have the tubes welded to the case...just to keep things as strong as possible. |

Glen, for your car and your setup it's really not necessary, but if you got money to burn, go for it, jus remember real man with real rears don't have covers bitchesss |

the cover is nice for a little extra strength but make sure the guy setting up the gears uses the solid pinion spacer instead of the crush collar |

I plan on getting one for the 9 bolt i'm putting in...definately not necessary for the power i have now and what the 9 bolt can handle but it looks cool and may help a bit down the road if i beef up the motor or driveline. Might as well do it now if you can than tackling it later. |

Depends on your driving. Do you beat on the car a lot? I put one in because I planned on pushing more power, and after only about 56k miles, my 10-bolt started coming apart even with stock power levels. These 10-bolts really are hit or miss. |

Not looking to hijack this thread but I'm looking to change my rear end in the spring. My pinion and carrier bearing are shot which is causing a leak thru the pinion seal. My issue is to decide on keeping my stock 2.73 gears or upgrade to steeper gears. I have time to think about it. Glen - keep this thread going with progress, I would be interested on how it turns out. Good luck |
