BANG! Bye bye rear

Well i blew my rear yesterday snapped the axles.

It's a stock 10bolt i'm guessing 7.5inch being an '87

I've called Strange Engineering they don't even make stronger axles yet alone they said it wouldn't even be worth it..

Called Moser Engineering and they make replacement axles but will come no where near to holding 475TQ.

Was looking around for 12bolts possibly found one out of a 1964 SS Chevelle
what kind of fab if any at all would it take to make it fit to an 1987 T/A

Thanks,

Bryan

Shit, how did you not blow the T5 to bits first? lol

To get a 12 bolt out of a Chevelle to work is, you'll need to have the brackets for the lower control arms welded to the axle housings. You'll also need to something for the top of the rear. Stock, the Third Gens use a Torque Arm set up that bolts to the differential in the front and runs parallel to the transmission and mounted with a clam type clamp. You might just be better off buying a 12 bolt already made or just building a 10 bolt.

I'm sure someone with much more experience will chime in.

What type of rear is that 91'?

I've been told the 10bolt with the 7.5inch gears won't handle the power the axles are just too weak lol.

Just the Axles/Housing for a BRAND new 12bolt i'm looking at $2,000 then probably another $2,000 to build it

Found a Ford 9inch out of a 68 GT rear $225 drum to drum

Take a look at ThirdGen.org's Drivetrain Forum. They should have some more options for you there. You dont want Glen's stock rear. You'll blow that one to shit as well. Haha

the nine inch will run you about 3000 dollars from spohn if you start adding options...i believe only a spool version is 2500...which is a real bitch on the street..

the biggest problem with the 10 bolts are the crappy size axles and the crappy c-clips that hold them in..put any amount of bite back there and the puny clips snap right off..the small ring gears dont help either...

if your pushing 475 to the wheels ur better off going either 12 bolt or nine..dana too but those are kinda heavy.....there are alot of tricks you can do to the 10 bolts to make it handle high horsepower but once you start customizing stuff it adds up in labor...

i believe there is a thread I started here somewhere, where i linked a guy on TGO that builds custom rears for our cars..at a good price...

you gotta understand..once you start building horsepower you then gotta shell out the bucks for a rear..unless you never plan on hooking your car up then you can prob get away with a semi beefed up 10 bolt..or 12bolt

4th gen rear isn't any stronger. Diff. is 28 spline axles vs. 26 spline....still 7.5"ring gear and C clips!

You don't want to mess around gettin a rear that isn't made for our cars and welding brakets and gettin the geometry right. Waste of time and money

find one that is already done and set up or buy new, you can throw glens rear in prolly in a hour or so and then take your time and build one right that will take the abuse and power

I have a 9" myself with a backbrace welded on and it's been beaten on like a hooker in hunts point, never a problem.

why not just have mooser build you a 12 bolt that will bolt right in.. all you have to do is tell them what you have and theyll build it..

i eventually have to get a new year but aint putting slicks on yet so it should hold. for now..

I actually wanted to ask you if ur gunna see track time..if u hook up ur rear the 12 bolt might not be for u..those puny c-clips can't hold up to much power..and if they go , then the whole axle pops out taking out any sheetmetal in its way.. Yeah u can put c-clip eliminators but they leak and I won't recommend them...ur best bet if u see track time is a 9 inch..for many reasons..better pinion support, larger ring gear, no c-clips etc...
