So, by now you're probably saying to yourself, "who you calling old you little punk?!". Well, with age comes wisdom and right now I could use a little. I picked up this intake from the guy we got the three piece spoiler from. Its an Edelbrock Streetmaster, single plane intake for a sbc. Is there anything you guys can tell me about it? I'm contemplating putting it on my 305, but may be getting a smoking deal on a 350 very soon and may put it on that as it would give me the hood clearance I need in my Firebird. Depends on how high the intake/carb is on the 350.

Single plane sux on the street after 3000 rpm it's ok
Unless u have forced induction then it's good.

Unless you have a big cam and high flowing heads, or some radical small block you really dont need a single plane manifold. You lose torque down low and the motor only gains a few hp in the upper rpm range. Stick to a dual plane manifold look for an rpm air gap it is the standard for dual plane manifolds

Yea not a fan of a single plane on a somewhat stock motor. I had my victor jr on before I did head work/cam and it made no power off idle which is were you want it when you are street driving. Stock heads really limit the power right when the intake is the most efficient. Not really the best combo.

I know high rise single planes look killer, but you can get an air gap and get much better performance of a mild-stock motor. That intake looks like an RPM air gap anyway without the dual planes.

What you guys said is pretty consistent with what I have been reading about it. Though others say its great for a mild engine. I dunno. It will look nice sitting on my desk until I can get something better I suppose.

Although it is a single plane, its not as beefy as some of the brodix, victor, weiand single planes. So it will perform a little better than those because of its smaller size, though no matter which way you slice it a dual plane will out perform it on the street.

Also when you mention mild engines, they are usually far from stock. Mild heads, Mild cam, ect...Aftermarket but far from stock. That's what I assume when someone says mild small block, something built just not radical and with no power adders. Your engine is still pretty much stock as it stands.

Makes sense, still though, would it be more beneficial than the stock dual plane intake I am currently running?

I guess you kinda missed the point. You stock dual plane will make more power on idle to probably 3500rpm. This single plane will probably give you similar performance in the mid-rpm range and wont make more power until the upper RPM ranges, which is useless with stock heads/cam. Will it work yes. Will you notice a difference? Almost positive you will notice less power off idle.

Sell it and grab a performer or RPM air gap. I had my refinished performer on sale here for a few weeks unfortunately no one grabbed it and it just sold on eBay for 35$.

No need to be sorry, lol. You could use it, if you like the way it looks. It wont make your car un-drivable. Just less desirable acceleration off idle, and it will put your power curve more in the upper rpm range where your heads make less power. It will run fine though. If you get it powder coated or respray it natural silver I am sure it would clean the engine up a ton.

Eh, it just needs a good spit shine and polish and it would look alright. Weighing the pros and cons I'm not really gaining anything other than aesthetics and the complete elimination of my EGR (currently running block off plate, looks like garbage). A 305 coupled with 2.73 gears and a THM350 tranny doesn't provide much acceleration to begin with, but I paid $40 for this thing and gasket sets are cheap, I may run it for a while until I get the 350. Its not like I'm racing this car for money, its just a cruiser.

It is a pretty intake though. ;)

I have a performer pretty much brand new give me $50 for it . Either that or you should buy the RPM AIRGAP Lance was selling if he still has it . I put one on my car and There's a huge difference. And I have what you'd call a little more than mild engine .

Its a work in progress

I'll let you know on that performer. I have to see how the situation with this 350 pans out. I don't want to do too much to the 305 if I'm going to be ripping it out for more displacment anyhow.

Performer is more than enough on a 350. The single plane would be too much for the stock 350 too.

I'm going to find out first hand what the performer can do. We've got an old one we're going to install on my wife's 350. The only thing holding us up is finding a carb for it. The intake is a spreadbore design. Most of the affordable carbs aren't and I'm not keen on running an adapter plate. I had to tweak the one on mine to get it to work properly. I ended up filing an 1/8th inch of material out of the rear ports to allow the secondaries to open with the one I used for my Edelbrock.

If you dont have a decent carb for your setup, and/or its not tuned properly you wont really notice a true difference with intake manifolds.

Its installed on her car and it seems to idle and throttle up much more smoothly than ever before. I still haven't ridden in it yet but She drove it to work and says she is in love with the new setup. I ended up giving her my 4bbl Edelbrock and adapter plate and installing her 2bbl on my 305. That's love for ya.

To justify the swap with anyone cringing at the thought of that I've come to terms that a 305 is a 305 and without a ton of money in mods it will never be the nasty little street motor that I am looking for. ;)

And the guy we bought the spoiler off of...offered us a 350 motor..complete, 4bbl edelbrock and all, for only 400. It's a matter of getting the cash. ironically it's a guy who works with my old man, who i haven't seen since a kid, and he's gonna hold onto it as long as we need him to.He's got his own 70 camaro project, and god was it beautiful!! So the swap of his 4bbl to my performer manifold makes sense. Maybe too soon, but easier to do a swap on one car, instead of having them both down especially if and when it gets colder. I do want to do this by the end of Oct, if weathers allowable. I'm hearing nasty rumors on winters early arrival :(

It is outta love...but he's gonna get upgraded too soon enough :)

The style of the intake really isn't that important, what is important is what you do to compliment it. You simply can't install a single plane intake on an engine that was designed to work with a dual plane from the factory, you need to tailor the right camshaft, correct your fueling, and even pay a little attention to your cylinder heads. Velocity is increased with a single plane, and if you don't work around it properly then your torque will be raised in your RPM range, in a sense losing it. If that is the case, and you don't plan on swapping the heads, cam, or carb jetting, then you will need a stall speed to even attempt to "enjoy" the ride...
