Balance w/Lexan Hatch Glass

>I know the topic of a Lexan hatch replacement has been brought up before here, but how would taking the 75+ pounds off the rear affect the balance of the car? That's quite a significant amount to be removed from the rear! That's got to affect the handling in a negative way, right?

i would think so unless you put a bigger spoiler on it for more downforce as you go faster

Move battery in the back...an average battery will weigh 30+pounds...and/or switching to a fiberglass hood will offset the weight different in the front...what were our cars weight f/r anyhow?..they weren't 50/50 or even close if i remember correctly...like 60/40 or something no?

I think the next experiment will be to drive this car with the hatch and t-tops off. I want to see what'll happen....

Dave...it's 57/43 according to road and track.

You'd certainly have less traction. But i wonder what it would do to spring rates. I think that would be one of the bigger things to look into but dont know too much about it.

fiberglass hood and battery relocation would help out alot. maybe pull the a/c too and thatll shift most of the saved weight, if not all, to the back.

It wont effect the traction to much because the glass is 90% of the weight and its called polar weight, this is the weight furthest away from CG, the springs and sway bar would have to be adusted/changed to correct the cross weight, the battery unlike drag cars would be better located in the passenger seat location or rear seat, this get the weight of things you cant just throw out closer to the CG.

There's always thing you can do to get more traction, shave weight if/where you can but I don't see how it would really be cost effective for a street car to run lexan windows unless its for some sort of cosmetic enhancement. Decreased weight furthest away from cg does decrease body roll though. Keeping weight transfer closest to the cg is best as far as handling goes.

Well for sure the battery is going to be relocated in the right rear seat well. For that matter a fuel cell that's inside the rear axles would be better for balance too.

Well make sure you get sealed box and a solid cut off switch, so its track legal. Not so sure how to run an easily accessible cut off from the rear seat to the rear bumper area. Which is why I pulled my spare/jack and mounted my battery there. Though I hear the inspectors at English town don't even pop the hood nowadays.

You can go to a weight station for trucks, throw em a good tip and they should let you on no problem. Some scrap yards also have in floor scales.

But the four pad scales gives you weight distribution as well........

Ed or Spade...what was the weight difference between the glass hatch and your notch hatch? Fiberglass, right?

Truck weight stations can give you front/back weight but not at each corner (which really doesn't matter all that much anyhow)...only catch is you need to wear a cowboy hat and have a screaming case of hemroids to get access.
