Hey guys, So Today and Wed I will be finishing up the rest of the Body work with my Father on my car. Hopefully by Wed Afternoon it will be all set to go get painted. If you do not know about my build, I have been trying to stick to a budget, being a college student it is kind of a must. lol

Does anyone know someone who could give me a nice paint job on a budget. I know I can go to Maaco and let them spray my car, but I would rather be able to meet with someone and discuss my options and prices.

I am looking to spray my car Yellow. Like the new Camaro and Corvette shades of yellow. Some shade along those lines.

The ground effects, Spoiler, Side view mirrors, Gas Tank Cover, and Rear Bumper are all off the car and wrapped in bubble wrap ready to be transported. The Car does run but is not registered or insured currently so it would need to be flat bedded to and from the shop.

Let me know if anyone could paint my car or if someone knows someone that could help me out.

Thanks

First. How much money you got, the more you throw in the paintjob the better it is for you. Keep in mind yellow is expensive, you need sealer, basecoat and clear coat. With quality products, that's close to a $1000 in itself.

Being you got the body work done to your liking, the most expensive part is out of the way.

You need to go call and email different company's so you can go through pricing as far as paint bc/cc, primer, sealer.

Once that is taken care of you can put down on a piece of paper your budget, and see what fits. Leave a 10% margin for error.

If you bring your car to anyone they will recommend the highest quality product 90% of the time. Makes their job easier.

Once you have all that taken care of you can go to someone with your plan of attack and talk it out with them. The biggest problem I have when dealing with a customer is their general lack of knowledge for the cost of paint supplies and labor. When you tell someone its going to cost 800$ for supplies + labor they think you are ripping them off. The most common response I get to that is I can bring my car to maaco and have them paint it for 600 including everything. Well the fact is maaco can buy standard quality paint in bulk, same as their supplies allowing them to have a much larger profit margin. Truth is if you were to use the same materials as maaco in the same amount of time, maaco will be able to do it for cheaper 90% of the time.

A guy in my shop just bought clean 89 corolla w/ 75k miles. He asked if I could paint his car just so it looked a bit nicer. It would cost at the cheapest $500 for a standard single stage paint job and that's on the lower end of the spectrum. His response was WHAT?! after that response I just told him to forget it with that response its not worth the time or money for either one of us. This reminded me why I don't paint other peoples cars.

500$ is a lot of money for most people. For someone who doesn't know how much a real paint job costs, they will expect there car to come out like a show car. In reality I can do some pretty nice things with a paint gun but its not going to look like a $2500 paint job. That's were you run into big problems. Its a tough business, that's why I myself have gotten more into paint correction and touch ups. much much cheaper, night and day results, customers who's cars that can be corrected are generally always astonished.

As far as paint goes I only tend to shoot 3 different kinds. HOK, PPG, or Dupont. And as far as yellow goes HOK Chrome yellow is by far my favorite.

i went to maaco, paint came out only as well as my body work did, cost $600. paint looks fine still, 2 yrs old and always outside in the elements. I was able to talk to them aboutwhat i wanted and blh blah blha, wasnt really all that hard. Everything that i wanted was noted on the paper for the painter 2 follow and besides not removing a bumper sticker everything was done fine

@ Charged355

Honestly right now i probably have $600-$800 to spend right now total. I was wondering what other options i have besides a 3 Stage. I looked into 1 Stage paints and i have heard they come out have way decent as well. I know the Car isnt going to be 100% and a show car. i want paint that is gonna last and not flake away within a year. Yellow is my first choice and i really would like to stick to it. I was wondering if there is anything else i can do.

@K28, Black83zee

Thanks for the Numbers guys, I will try contacting them as soon as i get a chance.

@19transam86

I have also heard it depends on what Maaco shop you go to when you have your car painted

@Blackbmagic

That really clears up a lot of confusion for me. I understand more that a good paint job is expensive. My whole idea is not to look for the cheapest place but the place i can get the most bang for my buck. like i said im trying to stick to a budget. I can dump all the money in the world into my car but that kind of defeats my whole purpose of the build.

I am doc, stay away from single stage paints, do a bc/cc job. I I was you I would save up a bit more money closer to 1500. It's better to do it right once then pay 5g down the road to redo it. Trust me I do this for a living.

What primer do you have the car primed in or is it not primed. I suggest a duPont 2k primer and I use ppg sealer with BASF paint and DuPont clear coat. My car was done with that and has been outside all year round for almost 10 years now, gets cleaned and waxed maybe once a year and still looks pretty good.

Quality in the beginning will be worth it in the end.

Paint is not something that can easily be corrected. So chose carefully. If you can throw up some pics of the car in current state that would help.

For Primer i used SEM Etching Primer. The stuff works amazing IMO. It was suggested to me at Albert Kemperly, the guy said it acts as a sealer and primer so i would not have to shoot a separate sealer. I know more money would be a better start, i could prob get another $200 in the next few weeks, but with Christmas Around the corner, its gonna be hard to save. I would like to get the car painted before Winter starts so i would not have a rusty car again in the spring.

The Body Work is 98% done, i just need to finish sanding down 2 little spots on the roof and A Pillar. and quickly scuff the Passanger Side Fender. Everything else for the car is either wrapped in bubble wrap waiting for paint or is being completed by me, Such as the windshield wiper arms and the Rain Rails.

Here are some of the pictures

Dude, i'm in the same boat as you as i'm doing the formula in hopefully a week or so. I'm going the maaco route as i want to recoup my money when i sell, and spending $3500 on my car is too much. Bc/cc at maaco will run you an even grand. For the amount you have that is probably going to be the best your going to get. I have a few leads in jersey on private guys that work outta their garage that i got from my friends that do body work, but these guys tend to have the car for a month or so, something i;m not willing to do. Matts car looks fine after a few years, its not show but he can also drive it and not have a heart attack if a stone chip or door ding gets in it..plus its on budget. I've gotten quotes from 2300-4g's from reputable body shops so thats about the going rate nowadays...and the body guys here are correct, paint will probably cost you at least 8bills. You want door and trunk jams painted too i'm assuming? That will run you more at any shop too. Pm me if you want my contacts....good luck. :rock:

Unless it's your show car and it's a '70 big block chevelle with matching numbers a top quality paint job is a waste of money. With our cars....being so low to the ground, unibody, and plastic bumpers etc...the body is very fragile. Listen, I spent $ 400 just getting the front bumper and spoiler stripped and painted and within a month I had stone damage and driveway scrapes! Do the prep work right and go to a reputable body shop....knowing that no matter what you spend on a paint job, s**t happens. I'd rather enjoy my car and not worry about every little bump in the road.

@ 1320B4U Yeah dude im deff interested, ill PM you. I had called up a few shops before posting this thread and guys are saying 3-5g's for a good quality paint job. I originally paid $800 for my car so dumping 5 grand into it is not worth it in the least bit. I do not plan on selling my car either so im not looking to make my money back on a resale. My car is put together with parts from 10 different cars and i made my car what i wanted it to be so i totally agree with you. Im gonna finish up the rest of the body work tom so i will be totally ready on friday for paint.

@Black83zee I totally agree with you dude. My car is not gonna be a show car. Im gonna drive it a few days a week on the Long Island Expressway of all things so the road is gonna kick stuff up all the time. I plan on enjoying my car and beating the piss out of it when its done lol. I feel like my prep and body work is great for my skill level and of course having my father look over everything since he has years of experience as well. I hope i can get this thing ready before spring, I wanna come to the meets and the car shows and the cruises

As promised, here are the pic's of my s15's 'ambassador' paint job done back in '06. Had maaco do a patch panel in the drivers lower door and fix some bubbling above each quarter panel...came to about a $1200 all said and done painiting the door jams too and not the inside of the bed, its a truck. Truck was handed down from my father and was the truck i learned to drive stick on so when i sold it i got my money back from paint..had to stay on budget. Going on these forums sometimes clouds the mind. One ends up thinking not of what they want and budget but rather what others have and what people will think. 9 out of 10 people aren't body guys, they see a car w/a good paint job, panel alignment is good (that is one of my peeves), and its 'shiney' and the overall picture it paints is its a nice shape car. Also its in the finishing details, matt threw on the lower factory stripe kit and bird decals so it brought his car more together too (although i will personally paint his door handles and keyholes myself black one day :D ) Remember no one needs to know its maaco and they do the most cars and insurance work each year..if they were bad they'd be outta business by now. I think the general consensus is if its a driver, sits outside, and your on a fixed budget (under a grand is a real fixed budget), you now where to go...mmmm double-a cco.

^ Thats why you have to find a specific one thats good..quality varies greatly between the unfortunately...i had my '84 painted at a certain one and it didn't turn out very good. The one i currently deal w/now is great. Yellow is a forgiving color, its not like its black.

I think all MAACO's are franchises...which means every owner is different. Paint and body work is such a skill and experience process....so much of it is feel and passion...you either care about how the car turns out or it's just a job and you crank them out as fast as you can....and money isn't always a barometer. I've seen expensive jobs turn out bad as well!
>BTW...awesome paint job, Dave.....and now the new owner knows it's maaco! too bad it's gone.

@1320B4U I sent you a PM back and The truck looks great. Thats what i keep reading that it all depends on what Maaco you go to. There are a few problems that i have thought about. Where is the best Maaco shop by me? I live out in Lake Ronkonkoma in Suffolk County, Driving the car to a place more close to the city and NJ is gonna cost a lot of money. My car is in pieces, so would they accept the car like that? I have the Ground effects, Rear Bumper, Gas Tank Cover, Side View Mirrors all off the car wrapped in bubble wrap. Will these places accept the car the way it is bc it is not registered and insured right now. Are any of these places going to check over my work or just spray the car? I wanna know if they are going to look over the car first and if they notice any imperfections, would they correct it or just paint over it. Those are some of the problems I feel will come up.

@ MCMLXXXIIIZ28 I understand, the less you put into it the worse the results are in the end.

@Tmurph Thanks for the contact, im compiling a list of shops in my area and trying to figure out who would be best for the job at a good price.

Thats the beauty of maaco, some places would just shoot over your existing blemishes and bugs on the front end unless stipulated...lol Like you stated, a normal body shop wouldn't even touch your car if its unregistered or in pieces (although a shop should paint the pieces, i mean if they do resto work its common). The maaco i go to would paint pieces as they do resto work on cars and there a few 60's vehicles iin the back. If you ask them to d.a the car beforehand they would normally do it regardless though.

A shop will prefer a car that's taken apart less work for them, do you expect the car to be wetsanded and polished or just painted?

When I gave Maaco my truck I asked them to replace the drivers door and the tailgate. I supplied the parts for them and they painted the parts and installed them (well, almost installed them). I had a few issues with them like I said, but it was a truck that I really didn't care if there were a few mistakes. Just watch out when you tell them to paint it a certain color and you didn't see the color before they sprayed it. I asked them to "paint it blue". They chose a deep sparkly blue like you would have seen on a boat in the 70's.

Ok, let's make this simple, don't do macco. In any way shape or form. Waste of money. Just the time you put in the car to get it ready for paint is not worth covering it up in their shitty single stage paint that will never be matched again due to the fact they get their colors in 55gallOn drums. Search for shops, and people who paint on the side. If you had a place to paint the car I could paint it for you, my shop is pretty far from you so that would cost you a decent chunk to get it to me. I can't stress this enough, get quality materials in bc/cc paint and get it painted. Or you will have to redo it. Take my advice, I do this all day every day.

@ Charged355 That seems to be my dilemma. If i had a place to paint that would make my life a whole lot easier. i have done some research online and im looking at different types of paint. Wet sanding and polishing doesnt have to be done by the shop even though i prefer it, but my father and i could do that if worse comes to worse. I can see Maaco being a big risk taker and i have a 50/50 shot of the car coming out half way decent but is it worth it like you said. I guess i need to see where i can find a booth or a garage thats converted if anything. Ill keep on the look out. also your right about trailering my car to your shop, i would cost me a large chunk of change thats not worth spending on transportation.

@ ZZ383GTA I like in Lake Ronkonkoma, Suffolk County. If i needed my car transported which i most likely will that would be great. What kind of truck do you have? Where are you Located?
