Owner wants to trade me outright...appraised for 28k via insurance co but its not a 28k car...body is a little wavey in spots (middle of doors for door dings and such and where they blended the new quarters to sail panel in roof). 1969 442 originally a cutlass-s 350/rocket car. Now has a 455/30over..lunati cam/wiseco pistons/tci trans turbo 350 back to an original 2:73 rear that was refreshened, 850 carb . Disc conversion front end, new springs/shocks/4core radiator, 82k from new/rechromed bumpers/trim is mostly replaced...interior original and so damn near perfect...no rust anywhere..floors/trunk pan etc..new quarters and paint 10 years ago..aftermarket hood, original 442 type wing on trunk, hella conversion lights....factory air that owner stats works..new exhaust

...and my 1999 c5/6spd..pretty much stock outside exhaust/intake

I'm looking at this as a fun car but also something that i could still get money for down the line..my vette is losing value each day whereas this isn't..trade in value on my vette is crap towards a new camaro. I drove this cutlass and it rides nice...a 42 year old car which is just out there, whereas the vette is refined..to compare the 2 is too tough and i'm on the fence but am leaning towards one more than the other..brought my friend and he agrees w1320B4U but want to see what everyone thinks...really need opinions here please. This vette is a beast and responds awesome to mods if i choose to go that route but i'm not.

I chose the olds, just because its value is a bit more stable as opposed to the vette which as of now is decreasing in value like you said. Its not an original 442 but still def holds some value. I'm not sure what you situation is but the olds is a hot rod, you will most likely be under to the hood a good amount whether or not its runs like a top now.

I might just have the least biased opinion as of right now. I almost just through down a good chunk of change on a 72' Cutlass last week. The car was in primer and looked good. But the guy claimed not to have enough money to finish it right and wanted to get rid of it. I looked into it and decided no because after some investigation I noticed when I looked inside of the door panels there was body filler covering the rust on the outside. After seeing that I noticed the fender lips where filled as well as around the rear window. Body work was done very very well to conceal rust, but totally done just for that reason. Would not have lasted long at all.

Aside from that whole ordeal, I have been looking for a c5/6spd vette for the past year. Something not touched at all, driven by a grandpa, and preferably a high mile car. Ive seen them just not too many grandpa driven manuals out there. For my next project.

Cutlass s goes for around 10-13g...i'm pegging this one at around 15-16 in todays market at the highest end..right around the value of mine at this moment.

I'm really leaning towards just holding onto mine. Funny thing is, i realized that when i answered my own question stating, if this was a '69 camaro i'd have it already.

VETTE!!!! If you are saying that the 2 are at the same price as of todays market, the vette will eventually increase in value. Where as the olds is at the to of it's market and even if you fix it up to mint condition I don't think you will get your money back or make a profit.

If I had the olds I would trade you for the vette. Ask yourself this; why does this guy want your vette?

Its going to be awhile before the vette starts to increase in price. IMO this guy wants the vette because hes done tinkering and restoring an old car, maybe he wants something that he can stop putting money into and drive across state lines if he had to.

The cars are on two totally different ends of the spectrum. You have to ask yourself what you are looking for.

An old restored hot rod, that will turn many heads, that you will probably be tinkering with constantly. Or a modern sports car, reliable, with great handling, that has been seen many times over.

If your going to keep the vette I suggest you decide on keeping the miles low and keeping it for a long time if you are concerned with resale value. My buddy went through this a few years ago with his 00' z28. He wanted a new car but didn't want to sell it because of sentimental value. He wound up getting a new c6, but that Z28 that was worth 15k 5 years ago is maybe 5-6k now. He kicks himself in the ass everyday and the car sits in the driveway 200 days year.

^ Your right...vettes decrease until they get about 25years of age..then they go up. Bottom basement price vettes are the 84-86 models now which go for $3500 and up. Since they were massed produced, only really clean ones will command a decent dollar several years down the road, but never the amt of the 50-60's ones. I had an '81 that i got good money for back in '02. My vette just turned 80k miles on the way home.

I left out a few things w/this guy...he's a master mechanic, his garage is ridiculous...30x40..lift etc etc etc. He has a built '85 442, another 70 cutlass covertible and a '06 stang gt that he did the roush conversion on..real nice guy and seemed pretty honest...he just always wanted a vette and really liked mine to the extent that he would do anything for it. Yes vettes are a dime a dozen but no one has work done to them..i mean visually mine is pretty nice (if i say so myself)..most people think its more high dollar than it is but its something that is just refined w/o issues (as of now)...this '69 is something cool which will keep its value but its pretty much a point a to b car....i drive my cars a lot and love the reliability, hence why i keep my cars mechanically stock. I called him and told him i would decline just a little while ago...i mean call me crazy but i really want a new 5th gen and besides a 1st gen camaro or possible cuda/challenger (i'd obv throw cash in on one of them) i really don't think anything else would change my mind.

...and thanks for the input guys...i'm actually surprised w/all the gear heads here i thought it would've gone the other way.

I vote Vette also. The Olds looks like a sick ass car, but is it something you want to take on long trips? The Vette is the all in one car. Sexy styling, fast as hell if you mod it, and can do a long haul without giving any fuss.

Depends on what you're going to do with it. The Vette is definitely the driver....you won't find any better except for a newer one or a Lambo. Take it to the track or drive the twisties upstate in it! The Olds is the hotrod....cruiser, show car, trophy winner?...got power, but you probably won't go over 70 in it! My $0.02.

So i just got reamed out from this guy as to why i didn't like his car. He called me today, i explained my stance that i will keep my car and that it would be harder to sell the '69 if i get tired of it (plus how i just really want a 5th gen) and he went off, telling me i wasted his time on sunday w/him cleaning it and fixing the headlight switch and all......bare in mind this sunday was just to check each others' car out..nothing more or promised. My car hasn't been washed since the spring. Guy was over zealous x10, pointing out how mine needed this and that. Now i'm glad i didnt' go thru w/it...guy was devastated when i left according to my friend...i should have went off too, stating how he didn't have an apprasial for the 28k he stated it was worth, how it was what it was insured for...or how the doors weren't 100% straight or the bondo in the sail panels. I wasn't that picky, but when someone overstates their car and its not what they said it was then its fishy....common rule, when you want something that bad then don't make it obvious. I said my car wasn't 100 perfect..just a driver too...crazy

He went crazy like that because he knew if you did the trade either he got the best deal ever or he had that sold already to fund his next car. He probably had a nother car waiting for him to sell the 442 and no one wanted it for his price. You did a smart thing.

You should go past his house with the vette and leave a long smokey burnout.

I hear you. He told me he had it up on ebay in the past..then a guy w/a c4 vette wanted to trade him but he passed. I mean the audacity...i wasted HIS time? I'm the one selling the car...i told him my car wasn't mint, its not nearly worth 28k that he said his car was APPRAISED for (before i even saw his car), and i don't have that extra $ to pony up to make up the difference..w/that being said i took time outta my schedule to drive to my friends house by Giants stadium, pick him up and drive to almost PA....all b/c i didn't want him to be disappointed that MY car wasn't up to par. I should have made him come to me or better yet don't show anyone my house and meet at a mutual location...i'm happy i brought my friend though...safety in numbers (i always bring him anyhow).

An apprasel really ain't worth sh!t. I can apprase my car for a million dollars and pay accordingly. He says it is worth 28k, I say 10k at best. So if this car was original with matching numbers, I guess this guy would say the car is worth 100k.

Appraisal meaning professional appraisal not what your appraised value is for insurance. Two totally different things. A good professional collectible car appraisal is actually worth its weight in gold, if you have a car that is worth something at all. Eliminates low balling and dream sellers. Allows the seller and the buyer to be more comfortable with a price.

Can't drive that thing over the gwb..its 3" off the ground. It'll be kept till spring until i decide what to do. Real or fake really didn't matter to me, but the actual condition vs stated is what got me...i didn't expect it to be mint, but don't state that it is and then it isn't...kinda makes you wonder what else it was hiding.
