For those of you who don't know, my project for next season is some body work/mods and paint. Doors are coming off, as well as hatch and the front windshield. I will get back to that later in the post. As far as paint goes I am doing the SW ultra7000 bc/cc line. Stock color 75(blaze red). What I want to know is what everyone's opinion is on metal flake. I'm not talking about large west-coast style flake, bass boat flake, or any of that holographic stuff. I'm talking about ultra micro fine .002" chrome silver flake closer to that of a pearl. I have never seemed to like metal flake. I have always loved the clean glassy depth of non-metallic base and standard clear. Recently Ive seen a few cars with some flake mixed in and it ads a little something to attract the eye. Looking at the same plain red gets a little boring after awhile. So basically I am asking, What would you guys rather see on my car? Also back to the beginning, doors are coming off. The pins are shot and offset causing noise and problems, Whats a decent hinge pin kit that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? |

For those of you who might not know what different flake sizes look like. This is .003", .002" is even smaller and more subtle than this.

Pearl, in my paint I have about 100 times more then normal, and it makes the paint flop different colors under differ light or angles, I played around with a lot of combos before deciding on the custom mix I liked, love my paint, only one in the world like that, but I needed to redo some stuff and try to make a match and redo the same mix over, it's tough, so whatever you choose Make more paint and save it. In the end, my vote is pearl mixed into the base coat, shoot sample spray outs until you like one. |

Never shot pearl, only flake mixed into the clear. What pearl do you recommend, and where from? Not looking to spend mucho bucks here, As spent a good deal on the paint but still fit my budget SW ultra7000BC and CC939 clear. That's why I opted ultra micro flake much cheaper than PPG pearls I see that are upwards of 200-300$ for 4oz. I have no idea how much pearl I need for the whole car and if it would be compatible with my bc.

I was thinking pearl too...its more new age and a lot of new cars come w/that mixed in..adds to the dramatic color 'change' when the sun hits it at certain angles...granted our cars aren't 'sweeping' but subtle angles like tops of the fenders, round corners of the bumpers and fender lips really would make the pearl pop. To me, flake is reserved for bass boats, 70's van's and cheaper paint jobs as it takes away from depth imo. Your not adding a lot but still...do the pearl...your saving funds by doing the work yourself, not doing stripes or other 2tone colors, so invest in a nice base coat. |

I'm not a big fan of flake unless its done right, funny story, my friend would use flake in clear all the time but I just didn't like it so one day I was like what if you put in more then recommended, he was like I dont know lets try it out I have to paint my brothers car next week, car was black and he added blue flake A LOT, car came out straight metallic blue, funny but it looked great. |

You didn't see my last post? I am using Ultra 7000 BC/CC which is pretty good and already paid for and in my closet. .002" flake is much like that of a pearl, just that It doesn't get mixed in with the bc. I assume you can mix with bc but I have always mixed with the first coat of clear or a clear mid/intercoat. You are probably thinking of flakes from .008-.025 in size. Those are the flakes used on bass boats, dune buggy's, and party vans. I would never do stripes, or two tone on the camaro. Straight color, shaved body. Pearl or flake is the furthest I would go visually with the paint. If anyone has a recommendation on pearl, how much do I need, approx cost, and where to get it Please let me know. |

I am not a fan of flake. It reminds me of a boat in the 70's or something you would see rolling down the boulevard in south centeral LA. I had a truck painted with flake in it and hatted it. |

Not that kinda flake! dammit don't you people read the thread before you post? lol The .002" Flake is very very small SLIGHTLY larger than that of a pearl additive. Alex is right I will do some test samples and then shoot two panels, If I cant decide I will let you guys decide for me. Right now I just cant find a pearl to add in with the paint.
