Lou's Short stick for the T56

The final mod I did to my car this year was to replace the factory 4th gen shifter stick with a Lou's Short stick. The factory shifter stick has a rubber bushing on the bottom that makes the stick feel like a wet noodle. It's also one of the main reasons people miss the 2-3 shift. It also doesn't give a good feel for the gears as well. The stock stick was 8.5 inches long, and the Lou's stick is about 6.5 inches.

In the pic below is a comparison. The Lou's short stick is on the left, a factory Hurst shifter stick is in the middle and the stock stick is on the right:

And the verdict is, I love this mod. Before, shifting the T56 was kind of iffy. I was maybe 90% sure I had it in gear. The throws are decreased a good amount and the shifter heght doesn't look stupid anymore.

Could you just use the top two holes on the factory hurst to make it 90% the same thing? What does the slight bend do for you? I have heard great things about this stick on 4th gen camaros/birds as well as GTO's. Very nice.

You probably could, but you would need to cut off the bottom part anyway because it would smack right into the base of the shifter assembly. The bend doesn't do much except to line it up so it's centered. The stock 4th gen one was at an odd angle.

The T56 I got came with a factory Hurst shifter which meant that it uses the factory stick with Hurst Competition shifter base. The feel with the new Lou's stick is much better since there's no bushing. Since putting it in, I haven't once missed the 2-3 shift. With the old stick, I'd miss it once in awhile during "spirited" driving.

I've also driven a 4th gen Trans Am with the T56 that had the factory shifter base and just the Lou's Stick installed. In my opinion, I think that the factory stick with the rubber bushing is the cause of 90% of the problems with people missing shifts. My friend's car with the stock shifter and Lou's short stick almost feels the same as my Hurst shifter with Lou's stick.

So when I wind up with my T56 do you recommend changing the stock shifter to the Hurst shifter? Or is it really not worth the extra time/money.

I would recommend getting the short stick first and trying it with the factory shifter. The stick improves it that much. The stick costs 40 bucks as opposed to a shifter which can cost 150. Some T56s though came from the factory with Hurst shifters since it was an option on SS and WS6 models. My T56 came out of a 97 SS and had the Hurst shifter already. If you can find one of these, all the better.

I actually compared a stock shifter and a Hurst, and the main differences are that the centering springs on the Hurst are stronger, and the base on the Hurst is thick aluminum instead of stamped steel on the stocker.
