I just bought a 95 saturn sl1 fully painted silver. not bad has a couple scraps. Nothing is wrong with it all all except it needs snow tires. I haven't drove in the the winter with a fwd car ever before. I know snow tires are a plus for winter but what else will keep me from sliding all over the road. It has 148000 miles and is very solid. A girl owned it previously and had a lot worked on it. Brakes rotors all lines are new new fuel filter tune up oil changed 2000 miles agao. Needs changed soon. Also has new exhaust and doesn't knock. What's any other good ideas to keep me from spinning the tires other then snow tires and not flooring it like most people do thinking it will get you out of it... |

Blizzacks on those steelies you have..other than getting studded tires thats the best your going to get. Problem w/small fwd cars is, they push the snow and don't get anywhere when theres any real accumulation...you'll be fine if you stick to main roads that are plowed though. Is it a 5spd, if so thats another negative variable when driving in the snow w/that thing. |

You guys have it all wrong on the Saturn. My wife bot one new in 95 and we sold it last year with over 180,000 miles on it. She drove it for the first 80,000 and I drove it til we sold it. That thing never had a problem that it needed to go to the dealership for. I just did normal maintanance to it. Worst thing that happened was the shifter pivot ball broke (very commom problem). As far as snow tires on it, I had regular mud and snow tires and never got stuck it the snow. That thing went in a foot of snow and still plowed thorough. I sold it because I had a feeling the original clutch was going to need a replacement and the cost of repair was more then the car was worth. |

Personally I dont think any car should be driven in the snow unless necessary. Dont drive like a mad man and take it nice and easy if you have to be on the road and you shouldn't have a problem. I can also vouch for those saturns durability my good friend has one that he beats up on consistently and parts are relatively easy to find on craigslist. |

I'll also vouch for the Saturn. The cookie cutter tires on it go through quite a bit, parts are plentiful, cheap and regular maintenance keeps these things going for a very long time. The things you want to keep in mind are that they are notorious for burning a bit of oil, its a design flaw in the engine that causes this. Your best bet is to switch to a synthetic blend oil, always keep extra on hand and check it regularly. They only burn a small amount but if over looked it can become a serious issue. If it is a five speed and you get stuck in snow, DO NOT try to rock it out by switching from reverse to first repeatedly. You WILL blow a large hole in the transaxle. Put a good set of snow tires on it and don't drive like an idiot in the snow and you'll be fine. Other than that these cars can take a beating. |

Congrats on the Satty! 148k is not bad at all! My 98 has that. In the over 5 years i've owned it, I haven't had to put more than $500 worth of maintenance in it. My aftermarket stuff cost more than the upkeep, lol! Saturns ARE oil burners. The piston does not have holes behind the oil control ring to allow excess oil to flow out. Some are worse than others, mine I only have to add a quart between oil changes, some have to add a qt every 500 miles. CHECK YOUR OIL REGULARLY! The SL1 is more known for head gasket problems too, gaskets or even cracked heads. You should probably replace the ects and the thermometer as a precaution, also known problems on s-series. I have snow tires on mine, and there isn't anything I haven't been able to go through safely. I do have a 5 spd, I have more control with the e-brake if I ever needed it. Not like you can't take it to an open parking lot and get a feel of the car. I've read alot on the Saturn forum i'm on about how alot of s-car owners have done better than the trucks they owned! They're light....however, I do have my 2 sub boxes, and my toolboxes in the back of mine, just for the hell of it ![]() I ended up keeping myself OUT of the ditch last year just because of the snow tires. Sorry Dave, but Blizzaks suck. Too soft, and don't grip as well. I have Hankook Ipikes on the front, Blizzaks on the back. The Blizzaks on the rear made my back end break loose and almost pull me into the ditch. And sold because of the clutch?? sh!t....Ebay has the clutch kit for $84 and $15 shipping....and WITH a best offer option!! Ahem....someone here was tellin me about sliding around a lil bit already with his 4x4

I spun a little, unintentionally, in 2WD as I was pulling out of the driveway. I don't have weight in the rear and it was that nasty greasy snow/salt mix. I put it in 4WD after and had no issues. |

when i say blizzacks, i mean just some form of snow tire, since i own a truck. you can make it almost anywhere w/that setup. having a truck though gives u piece of mind. i made it anywhere in my 2wd s10 but you have to always plan your route and note down possible issues, i.e a running start to make it up an incline or staying in the groove etc. i don't even use my 4wd except for mounting the snow drift caused by plows at the foot of my driveway...its just nice never having to worry about the snow and f'ing w/the pricks in lexus' or bmw's that are stuck...I LOVE DOING THAT SH!T...maybe theres an app for getting unstuck u yuppie bastards when i say blizzacks, i mean just some form of snow tire, since i own a truck. you can make it almost anywhere w/that setup. having a truck though gives u piece of mind. i made it anywhere in my 2wd s10 but you have to always plan your route and note down possible issues, i.e a running start to make it up an incline or staying in the groove etc. i don't even use my 4wd except for mounting the snow drift caused by plows at the foot of my driveway...its just nice never having to worry about the snow and f'ing w/the pricks in lexus' or bmw's that are stuck...I LOVE DOING THAT SH!T...maybe theres an app for getting unstuck u yuppie bastards Edited by 1320B4U, Jan 18 2012, 12:35 AM.

Haven;t gave me problems haha. Already sold this car!! owned it for two days and i parked it going in wal-mart. Some guy came up to me and said is that for sale. Pretty sure he followed me for 2 miles from my house. Creepy as sh!t. He said how much do you want i said throw a offer. He gave me 800 for it haha. So I have no car again and going to car auctions with my friends dad to find me either a 3 door tahoe or extended cab. like my chevy's Tires where fine on it. We had another pretty good snowstorm. didn't spin on me at all had a good set of winter tires. But yes i miss the truck. Edited by Illusion's, Jan 18 2012, 08:00 PM.

No Girl didn't sell me the car until actually 12 hours later. she needed it before she got her new truck. Wheel bearing was bad. She was really slow and didn't have a idea what i was talking about. I told her probably if you hit another bump you hit hard on the back roads your wheel would snap of causing you to go into the ditch or a accident. Shes like i cannot have that. I gave her 350 for it. She said she was going to scrap it. Told her not to do it and showed her the cash and took it. Only cost 48 dollars to register it. Already was inspected. Not bad of a deal too me. Like anyone else looking to make money here. I sold it for a price i couldn't resist. That's what i do. Some don't and some do. What's done is done. I hope i do have children I'll tell em to go on nythirdgen for me haha. : DThank's But it had 138000 miles. Wasn't bad just a little rusty underneath. Not bad though. Own a 91 camaro?? Why would i want to drive it in the summer? Edited by Illusion's, Jan 18 2012, 09:37 PM.

^ Better gas mileage and it keeps the miles off of your Camaro when you're driving to work/school or whatever. I don't use my Trans Am as a daily in the summer. Its my toy to put it simply. |

It has 123,000 miles. My camaro. it's got the 5.0. Miles are fine it's not a big deal to me really. I actually want to put miles on it and keep it amazingly clean to just show it's the cleanest one around with high mileage. Engine was previously rebuilt. I got some money set aside. about 500 bucks. Getting front end fixed and sprayed so i can take lebra off and getting tine little rust spot cut out and fixed. for around 500 bucks. then fixing the seals. You know how they leak. |

You can reg it for $48 just like horses up there....its under the 'general transportation' clause. If you bought for $350 and sold for $800, i'd consider it a fair move...100% profit. Your like a cross between Ray from Rainman and The Donald. |

All and all it works. Out When I'm seriously older I want to be able to go to car auctions buy fairly decent cars. Work on them sell them for reasonable prices. anywhere from the 2 thousand too 6 thousand mark. People don't have money these days and are looking for something that will get them around. I know you guys would take me as a joke owning a small car lot and garage. I think i'd do fine. |
