So I went to do a campus visit up in Seattle, which consisted of me waking up at like 4 in the morning and all that jazz. I was supposed to go up there for this little "Husky Experience" shindig.

Considering that it's springtime in the Pacific Northwest, I don't think I could have personally picked a better day for a campus visit. It was sunny when I arrived on campus, and they had the fountain just south of their main plaza (called the Red Square for some reason not related to Communism) flowing at the end of a row of cherry blossom trees.

You'd think that a school in a large city would be crowded, but it amazingly was hardly crowded at all. I was pretty amazed at how people just seemed to flow freely.

I had a huge, dumb grin on my face the whole entire time. The whole thing was really just too awesome, so I called my mom and decided that Seattle's gonna be where I spend the next four years of my life.

TLDR: Thread title.

So I guess I want to ask you guys that are there about college and whatnot. I have no idea what to expect, being the oldest child (I just got to see a dorm room for the first time, that was pretty cool). Any advice on what kinds of things I should do while in college (besides the obvious, I mean)?

First of all, congratulations. I'm probably going to apply to UW, though it's a toss-up on whether I'll end up in Seattle (UW), Boston (Boston U, right next to Fenway), New York (Columbia University), Washington D.C. (George Washington U or Georgetown) or some Californian city (LA, SF, SD, and the like). At any rate, I keep hearing excellent things about UW. And Seattle is an awesome city, even if driving can be hell. I'm going to a Red Sox v. Mariners game this summer at Safeco, so I'm really excited. Heh.

Anyways, apparently, college is a blast, although there are some times when it's a drag, too. I'd advise you to make friends as soon as possible. This is a golden opportunity for redefining yourself. After all, this is like a fresh start. There aren't particularly any groups formed at the start. Having had many fresh starts in my recent years, I can honestly say that it makes a huge difference.

My older brother goes to UO, but he has a fun time. He's got lots of friends and does tons of things, I hear. My two older cousins, who are also first-years, have been doing well and have fun, too. In other words, there's the academic side, but also, just don't forget to have fun and stuff.

If you can manage, perhaps it would be best not to have a job for the first portion. After all, you're probably going to be adjusting to college and stuff. But after that, you'd probably consider one to keep your tuition money flowing.

I suppose you're undeclared? Or have you found something to do? Either way, just keep in mind that people change their minds a lot when they're in college. Most people will be undecided on what they want to do, and even after they have to pick, they'll pick something pretty general, and then change. It's always a plus if you know what you want to do, but at the same time, I suppose you just shouldn't burn any bridges. I'm split between Japanese and Psychology, but who knows. I might just end up taking Theater, pursuing voice acting or whatever craziness. My dad started out in Sociology but ended up taking Biology, and eventually became a surgeon. And my mom started out with Biology and nursing, but became an Anthropologist. Both have no regrets.
