Went trout fishing up the mountains west of Winchester. Nothing to see there, but on the way back I found some topped off trees from wind or a tornado. interestingly enough about 50 or more "formations" in the vicinity can be seen from the road, maybe a year old or so. I have been looking hard for formations. I find dozens in the woods anywhere I go, including some behind stores so I'm still not convinced. |

That sounds like a good outlook. Examine the evidence, but always remain skeptical.

Brian, good job. Definately have to look around to determine the causes of some breaks and formations. They are definately sometimes natural. |

Billy I know your radar is up so chime in soon. I was theorizing more on formations recently and remembered back to a spot in the woods in Reston. It was on flat next to a creek. All tree trunks and logs/limbs were laying in the same direction. Every one of them had been there a long time, and perpendicular to the creek. Normally this wouldn't have grabbed my attention because it was high enough and far away enough for me to eliminate a super flood. However we did have a big one about 5 years before I found that. So in light of finding what was clearly tornadic or wind shear damage in Frederick. I was just sitting here thinking what if formations are not only a part of BF life, but what if the bulk of them is a product from such an event? Tornado's would create situations of dumping massive amounts of timber in all sorts of angles and perhaps piles. My neighbor 2 doors up has this great big old sycamore in their yard, but during high winds we get limbs in our yard coming off that tree big around as 1" dia. Thats a lot of travel for something that should fall straight down. I would love to get face to face with the items your found Fauquier. A: I am slightly learly of Fauquier as development moves in. B: Fauquier like Loudoun, is very prone to tornado's and other extreme weather. |

The good part about this part of Fauquier is that it is not CURRENTLY threatened by development. Actually, it is a protected area. There are still some good, undeveloped areas of Fauquier County that are largely undeveloped and connected to thousands upon thousands of undeveloped wooded acreage connected to Culpeper County. And the good part about these thousand acre areas, they are PRIVATE LAND! NO ONE walks around in the woods on a normal basis and these are the types of areas I believe a creature would pick out to call home. An area "out of reach" to human activity. I will type more as time becomes available. I did this from work and I guess I better get back to work!

Boy do I know all about time constraints! I key peck in haste from work and home. I have some good theories as to how to debunk these but I wouldn't dare go public with them as there is too much out there with "formations" as it is. I wouldn't be surprised at all if some are bait with more human origins. Of course my theories like any experiment require time I don't have at the moment. |
