Sarah, I suggest collecting any evidence such as hair using tweezers...touching it with your hands can cross-contaminate the evidence and give a false reading. There has always been a large paper vs plastic debate for containment. The only problem with plastic is that with drastic temperature changes, the plastic bags can sweat or create condensation...which in turn could hurt any evidence. So...in one way paper would be best...however...paper can be bad as it can ALLOW moisture to penetrate it. So, as you can see, each has its advantages and disadvantages. I usually have both with me...that way depending on the conditions I'm in, I can choose which is best. Obviously, take along the basics...tape measure, tweezers, collection bags (paper & plastic), camera, sound recorder (if you have one), paper and pen to take any notes, GPS (very handy tool). These are all small, basic items (with the exception of the GPS of course), to have with you. When I first started this research, I used to carry a backpack with WAY TOO MUCH stuff in it thinking I would need it all. Believe me, you will learn very quickly what you REALLY need when you are trekking through the woods with alot of weight on your back. LOL!!! Just carry the basics, if you find something significant, make certain you can find the area again if you need to get something else to help you collect evidence. (Like a body bag!!!!) LOL!!!!! Just kiddin, if you find a body, call me immediately!!!!!!!! |
