Just so folks know, I took this shot and I own the copyright. I have given Billy and Varge31 permission to use it, but no one else is to copy/share/post this shot without asking me first. Thanks! :)

Yeah, I have to say that is one of the most interesting twists I've ever seen. It is possible that Varge and I will bring the twist (which was cut out and removed) to the East Coast Conference in PA so that folks can get a look at it.

Hi, Brian -

The tree was a tulip poplar, 6.5" in diameter. The "top" of what was left of the trunk was 47" tall. The long piece of the twist that has been peeled of the bark was 7'7" long, and the top that had been broken off (and deposited several yards away) was 15' long. At its widest point, there was a 48" spread from the tip of a splinter to the tip of the farthest splinter. We estimated the age of the twist at about a month, due to the tree's attempts to sprout new growth on what was left of the trunk. We know for a fact that it was not there during the BFRO expedition, about three months prior. The wood had not yet dried out. We did look for hairs and found none.

During a Blog Talk Radio show several weeks ago, there was a viewpoint expressed that the twist had to have been done by a downburst. There are a few things wrong with this theory.

1 - Records indicate no severe weather (in fact, no rain at all) in the area between the BFRO expedition and when we revisited the site and found the twist. Yes, the twist is in a location where it would have CERTAINLY been found during the expedition, had it been there at the time.
2 - The obvious lack of other storm damage nearby
3 - I just don't see a downburst twisting a tree several times counter clockwise AND clockwise AND tying it into a knot.
4 - I also don't see a downburst damaging just ONE tree in a forest

Nonetheless, during a recent visit to the site I did take pictures of the canopy for those who wanted to see if there were signs of a downburst. There were none. I have posted a pic of the canopy, shot by the camera while it sat on the twist's stump, looking straight up, on the BFRO chat board at http://s2.excoboard.com/exco/thread.php?forumid=115581&threadid=1890807&page=2 There are other shots from the site on the thread's first page, and one of the videos begins from the same spot from which I took the first pic in the thread.

I also have two videos on You Tube, showing the canopy straight up and nearby. Those links are:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vW1K...re=channel_page

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dKW...feature=channel

There is one tree that appears to have been struck by lightning fairly recently (it's blonde at the top where the bark is stripped away, and has blackened "stumps" of its upper limbs left), and one shorter tree that has been snapped. Again, this was more recent as the wood is blonde. The twist's stump has already turned gray, so this indicates that these other two trees were damaged since last spring when we found the twist.

Hopefully, these new images will answer the downburst questions.

Wonder if the code changed when I copied it over from my BFRO post?

Here they are:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dKWHIS3rIU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vW1K4UIzJwM&feature=related

Hmmmmmm, they don't even look the same as my first links -- weird! OK, if for some reason these direct links don't work, you can find the videos on my You Tube page at:

http://www.youtube.com/user/RJCFWP

They are the first two videos in my collection.
